So this is my first season deer hunting north of Dallas. The places I was gonna hunt fell through last minute. So now I have to try and locate a new place that is close enough to travel easily to get a little bow hunting in. Any help would be awesome.

P.S. I know beggars can't be choosers but I am not looking for a lease or trophy. I want to fill a freezer and put meat on the table.

Some really nice deer are taken out of there every year. Wear your orange and pick a lower traffic area. The are several different pieces of land that comprise the grasslands, and it is possible to find one that doesn't get a lot of pressure.

Does this place require any sort of tags or license to hunt? I'm in the same boat this year and I don't know much about public hunting or draw system either.

Just your hunting license. No permits. You can stop at the office in Decatur and get a map for $10 (maybe not right now with the furlough...)

Do have to wear orange vest and cap while deer hunting. Like someone said- do your homework to find good, low pressure areas.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

LBJ doesn't require a type II, that's news to me. I didn't know it was any different?

The way I read it, only the WMA's require the type II, which the LBJ Grasslands don't fall under. I have it anyways, but not for the grasslands...

What about Caddo National Grasslands in Fannin County?

Is there anyplace I can get a map or talk to someone wanting to share info of the grassland? I will be headed out Saturday morning and haven't yet had a chance to scout it.
