I went out this last weekend to triple check feeders at my place and decided to check the stands as well. I open the door on my blind and notice it is LOADED with brush, cactus patches, poo along with other junk that something drug in. I noticed a hole in the side of the bottom of the wall.

After thinking about what to do I decided I would just rip out the carpet to replace with new carpet patch the hole and make sure nothing could get in. When I pulled the carpet I see that the floor is totally rotten and chewed out around the corners and needs to be replaced.

I decided I will buy new ply wood to lay over the existing rotten floor and patch the hole in the wall. I really just want to replace the entire thing but thought it might be to close to season to do so. I also thought about it and was thinking I would bring a new blind opening weekend, hunt the old blind in fear for that trip and swap out with the new blind the day I leave.

Do you think this would spook the deer and keep them from coming to my feeder for a while? What are your thoughts if I swaped it out the day I get there so I could hunt the new blind opening weekend?

Thoughts?

I don't see a problem with it. I am running way behind on my lease. I don't even have any stands up yet, just feeders.

Bad idea IMO. While I'm sure guys will have stories of how they put something up and saw deer the next day, you can't dispute that human activity in your hunting area CAN affect deer movement.

Do you really want all the noise and commotion in your hunting spot right before you're going to hunt it?

Yes, you should just "hunt the old blind in fear for that trip" and then swap out the blinds before you leave. Get to your blind early and wear leather gloves and well-padded clothes in case you have to fight for ownership of your blind.

agree with it being a bad idea. we wait all year long why not just wait a little while longer? Not a chance I would be willing to take. Like was said...wait to change it out when you leave and that will give them time to get used to it again.

No it's not. Go back and read his post. At the end he says:

Depend on where you hunt and if the deer are use to people around.

I was on the fence about both options. The more I think about it the more I think i should wait. I have to take my other hunters into consideration. I do not think they would appreciate me pulling a loud bouncy trailer through the property the day before season....... I guess the thought of hunting that crappy old blind made me get a little crazy. I will just cut some wood and put on top of the old floor and be done with it until I swap stands.

The amount of year around human activity will determine the effect a new blind has.

Whenever you do replace it keep the bottom of the blind off the dirt with some scrap lumber, steel, or bricks.Just make sure its stable. Even if you just use scrap wood and replace it year after year the work is minimal and the blind will keep longer. You can easily replace it without much noise/visual change and the mobile construction site in the woods that it takes to rebuild a blind floor.

I wouldn't do it at this point...might be ok in some places but it would be a problem on my place....if I put a new feeder in my feed pen it spooks them for at least a week...

leave the blind as is sits...get some good measurements and drop a piece or two of plywood in on the floor and a new piece of carpet. Worry about a complete overhaul AFTER the season is over.

If your blind is a ground blind and the new one is painted/shaped the same it should not be a problem. The farther away from the feeder the better you will be. Switching it out the last day you hunt and feeding a lot of corn around or close to it will help the transition. I have put up blinds and hunted them the same week.

Yep, we saw that too. But what he asked, and we answered, was his question at the end about our thoughts on him putting up the new blind the day he got there.

It's ok though Seadog, we forgive you for mistakenly trying to correct us. Really we do angel

I can't argue about the blind changing but when I change trucks every few years my deer herd goes ballistic when I drive through checking cattle and some take several of my daily trips before they are comfortable with any color changes. My smart arse deer can even tell the difference between a ford and chevy. laugh

We were out erecting our new blind on a tower last Sunday and the ranch owner was bringing the tractor over to help lift the walls. He came a different way than we did and there was a doe AT the feeder 100 yards away from where we were parked making all kinds of racket with screw guns and stuff.

All depends on how far away the blind is from the animal activity. Would not do it unless your at least 100 yards MINIMUM away. If your hoping to see mature buck sightings.

Mine prefer the old crewcab, that looks like the farm truck that is used in the pasture. They get skittish real quick when a different pickup shows up. We can drive the guy's pickup that farm leases from us and the deer just stand there and look at us, drive one of ours and they are on the move.
