 Can you carry a pistol while bow hunting?

Just wondering what the law is on that. I got charged by a hog last year on the way to my stand while bow hunting and don't know what would've happened if I hadn't been within 20 feet of another blind. Felt pretty defenseless with my bow.

Only if you have CHL.
It is a stupid rule.

if you don't get caught, if you have chl or mld3 IIRC.. don't run from no hog over there, cut its throat with a broadhead.

Call your local warden and ask him or we would be your best bet. I have heard some say its fine and some say no unless you have a chl. I don't remember how the rules are stated off of the top of my head.

It is next to impossible to identify how the animal was killed if the gun was fired. If you shoot first and dart the wound after you couldn't tell. It is some what silly rule.

"It is unlawful to be in possession of a firearm while hunting with a broadhead hunting point during the archery-only season, except a person licensed to carry a concealed handgun in Texas may carry a concealed handgun. Note: A firearm may be possessed in camp, in a motor vehicle, or while hunting lawful game other than whitetail or mule deer and turkey (e.g., exotics, feral hogs, squirrels)."
It is a stupid rule. They seem to trust us with a bow and firearm any other time.
If someone is tempted to break the law and shoot a deer, I really doubt that it being archery only season is going to make a difference.
I HF hunt exotics, but during whitetail archery season I cannot take my rifle if I have my bow, for that distant axis, black buck, or hog. Unless i am reading this wrong.

That is correct on the CHL holder may carry while bow hunting. Just read from hunting guide on Sunday.

I've had a CHL so long, wouldn't think twice. It is dumb.

Unless i am reading this wrong. if you arent hunting deer you can have your pistol with you. But you cant have a firearm with you while bow hunting for deer. If bow hunting for exotics, it is OK to have a firearm with you. I also agree... STOOPID rule

Have you seen Manu wounds caused by gun shots and bows. They do not look alike. It is easy to tell the difference. Even if someone stuck an arrow in a bullet hole, it would be easy to tell the difference. Broad heads cut bullets smash.

I know it may seem "dumb", but it is the law and is just one of many laws that I consider "dumb".
I went ahead and got my CHL just so I could legally carry during bow season. It is not that big of a deal to get it. I don't carry a firearm on me, except when I am bow hunting.
One thing you will find fascinating - the classmates in your CHL class. You will find out there are some crazy people in this world who carry a hand gun and who are just dying to use it!

Are you talkin state, USACE, or National Forest? The rules are different for each. I know in the national forest in Colorado, they don't care what you carry. You get charged by bears up there though, not hogs.

We asked the GM that stops by the deer lease and he said if you have a pistol on you without a CHL during bow season he will write you a ticket. My buddy showed him his S&W Governor with 410 shells only and asked what about this. He only carries that for snakes and it's obvious you wouldn't shoot a deer with a 410. The GM said it doesn't matter, laws the law. He said he understands my buddies thought process, but the law is straight forward and he follows it. I have my CHL so I don't worry about it. I would recommend getting a CHL if this is an issue for you. Better to get a CHL than get a ticket.

Your HOG HUNTING with a bow and you carry a handgun.
Tell the Game Warden YOU ARE HOG HUNTING. Never meantion deer. The book states you CAN have a gun in camp or your vehicle. If you arrow a deer put your gun in your truck before returning to camp
