Each gun is different even if it's the same make an model, just get a few different kinds and go shoot them and see what's best for you. I shoot an 1100 with a modified and mine patterns the same with pretty much any shell I put in it besides Remington steel.

Just try Kent's, rios and Winchester experts, all around 12 or 13 a box. I never shoot any fancy expensive shells.

I shoot Kent's out of my gun. They have seemed to work best for me but when the season starts I will probably try some other brands just to see their effectiveness.

just go buy some shells and go hunting or shooting. like I have said before...99% of the time when you miss it is not the type of shell or the choke, it is the person shooting.

Buy a box of shells. go kill ducks with them. if you are crippling more birds than killing, try a different shell next time after that box is over. Forget all the "pattern your gun before you hunt with 15 different shells and chokes." just go shoot the crap outta crap.
I like spoonie, his humor is dryer than my duck lease.

I know, but how many people really pattern their guns? Buy different chokes, different shells, and all. I mean I'd rather go hunting than to the range. I guess I can see the point if its in the off season, but I'm usually fishing then.

OK, if you can't bother to pattern your shotgun to see what works then try this.
Buy 1.25oz loads of 3s at around 1400fps and shoot through a factory modified choke.
Pattern density should not be a problem.
Thought for the day: Ducks were almost hunted to extinction long before camo was invented.

Just go buy 3 boxes of shells in your price range. Shoot each about 2-3 times at some paper. Find which one works better, buy a case, and just shoot the other two boxes somewhere you think they'll be effective. Took me like 10 min when I patterned my gun.
Thanks for all the positive THF support. Y'all are awesome.

I've been shooting the same 1187 for 16 years. With an improved modified choke. I like having the option to reach out and touch the far birds.and shoot at the nose of the close birds. It has a great pattern to 50+ yards. I shoot at a piece of cardboard and found that rios patterned just as good as the name brand shell. And my 1187 eats through them and never jams. Just my .02

X10...and the new VersaMax has put a real hurt on all the imports. After shooting the Versa,I can see why Benelli & Browning are so pissed off at Remington.

What ever shell you choose just remember the smaller the shot size the denser the pattern is generally but you may trade off a little knock down power. That being said I found my 870 does best with #4 shot, I get a dense pattern with enough grunt to knock them out of the air at a reasonable range, typically 30 yards or less.....I'd definitely do a mod choke too...
