Hey everyone new to log on to the forum. Have been reading THF for about a year.
A little back ground on me. I have been a lifelong Texas hunter of all game. Started my hunting life on a family farm 45 miles north or Lubbock; pheasant, quail and dove. I currently hunt 3 separate places in TX. Fort Stockton—Mule deer and Hogs. Westbrook—Whitetail and Quail. My primary place for the last 4 years is 4200 acre HF under MLD3 located north of San Angelo, TX.
Now for the reason of this post. Just curios what the THFers thoughts are on the effect of smoke smell on deer in the field. I am big into BBQing and Hanging out around a camp fire. Sometimes even after a shower or two it is hard to get all of the smoke smell off. Please let me know your thought, and feel free to include examples or stories.

I have often wondered the same thing and have the same issue. I have killed many deer trough the years with the smell of a camp fire on my clothes. With that being said, I also know how sensitive and keen the deer's nose is. Also how may times are you in the woods when the wind is blowing and you smell someone else's fire. It will be interesting to see some other post.

I smoke so I know for sure there's no amount of scent free soap/ cover scents that can get the smell off of me. I have to hunt the wind, if the wind is bad I have to use a different location, if it switches, I have to move.

If you do smoke or get too close to the fire you can use "Hunters specialties" scent away spray. You can spray it on your fingers after a cig and it COMPLETELY takes the smell away. Also handy if you're sneaking a smoke away from the wife And welcome to the THF

I don't think it bothers them that much. I burned a trash pile this last weekend and still saw deer not far from where I had the fire.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

a "wonder bar" will take smells off your hands better.
... plus it takes the smell of dove guts away too.

I don't the deer will care much as long as the smoke does not a venison aroma to it.

I don't think campfire or the smell of smoke in general bothers them, it is usually the human odor mixed with it. Hunt the wind and you don't have to worry about it.
I read an article by an old Indian stalker. His traditional right of passage from boy to man in his clan was to get close enough to pluck the hair out of a deer. His cover scent...you guessed it, smoke. He would stand down wind of a fire for an hour before beginning his journey and used cooled charcoal from the fire to rub on his skin. Pretty interesting.

I just about ashed my cig on a doe's back this weekend careful, lets keep this PG sir
If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

Being a smoker myself, I've had deer within less than 20 yds of my ground blind, both does and bucks. But I do hunt where there are a few houses within a 1/2 mile and closer to me and they burn trash, wood and fireplaces, so I believe the deer get used to the smell. Plus I'm only about 200 yds off a road that's traveled quite a bit.
