Well I hunt in Leon county and we are only allowed to take does during archery and thanksgiving weekend. So my question is since the youth season opens during archery , can my daughter take a doe with a rifle? I have looked at TPWD and after reading it I'm more confused than ever.

yes. If I read the book correctly, youth hunts operate under the same restrictions as regular hunts during the "doe days".

That's how I read it but it also kinda sounds like that's only with a bow and rifle for antlered deer. They have made it so confusing. I just want to hunt with my daughter but all the rules ( doe days during archery and thanks giving , antler restriction and youth only rules) make it a real pain sometimes. We are covered up with does and can't take any with rifles( except thanksgiving weekend). Do you really trust a 9 year old to take the buck that is legal given there is usually 5 of them in the feeder?

What is confusing below?

White-tailed Deer Youth-Only:
Age Restriction: Only licensed hunters 16 years of age or younger are eligible to participate in youth-only deer seasons. Youth Hunting License Required (Type 169).
- Early Youth-Only Season: Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 26-27, 2013. All legal hunting means and methods are allowed, except in Collin, Dallas, Grayson, and Rockwall counties, where lawful means are restricted to archery only (no crossbows except for youth with upper limb disability).
- Late Youth-Only Season: Jan. 6-19, 2014. The season is open in all counties where there is a general open season for white-tailed deer. All legal hunting means and methods are allowed, except in Collin, Dallas, Grayson, and Rockwall counties, where lawful means are restricted to lawful archery equipment and crossbows.
Bag Limits, take of antlerless deer, and special requirements:
• In Anderson, Brazos, Camp, Delta, Fannin, Franklin, Gregg, Grimes, Henderson, Hopkins, Hunt, Lamar, Leon, Madison, Morris, Rains, Red River, Robertson, Smith, Titus, Upshur, Van Zandt, and Wood counties, the bag and permit requirements are the same as the period Nov. 28-Dec. 1, 2013 for each respective county (see County Listings)

Ok Kyotee, it says permit /bag limit is the same as " doe days". You don't need a permit for doe days. Please explain

A permit is something that is required in addition to the license. The tags on your license are not permits. The hunter must still tag their deer with the tags off their license.

For example: Archery Only Season
No permit is required to take antlerless deer during an archery-only open season, except on MLD properties; HOWEVER, THE DEER MUST BE TAGGED WITH A HUNTING LICENSE TAG.

If you are under either the LAMPS or MLD permit program, you MUST use those permits during the Youth and General Seasons. MLD must be used during all seasons for the county if you are under that program instead of your tags.

Thanks for clearing it up, so she is all good to take a doe during the first youth season with a rifle.

Both of the Youth Seasons, early and late.
