Alright so as deer season gets closer and closer I have found myself with out areal place to hunt. Where I went last year is no longer in the family per say and the new place I wanted to hunt has seemed to fall apart mainly bc it is a spot I can only hunt on with the land owner on weekends and my new job I will be working on weekends.

So that brings to my attention the only choice I have is a day lease that I'm very weary of. I've heard plenty of horror stories and all that so I have a few questions so I don't end up having the same expierence.

What's a fair deal on a management buck and doe combo hunt?

All my life I feel I have been a little spoiled when it comes to number of deer I see per hunt. I've always had plenty of wildlife to watch and to me is the most enjoyable part of my hunt. With that said what are some realistic numbers of animals I should see?
Am I better off hunting a ranch that has MLD permits?
Any other advice is welcome and any personal expieriences as well. Also I know a lot of time u get what you pay for is that always true??

Look at the outfitter section. Most of them have been on THF for quite awhile and are pretty reliable. Even the new guys have a reputation to protect.

I did a day hunt two years ago, it was $100 a day, sunup to sundown, you could make any legal kills.

It was a last minute thing for me and we did not get out there until one in the afternoon. Funny thing was, three of us wandered around the couple hundred acres a bit then each got in one of the three stands. About an hour later, 3 does came by followed by a very nice six point. He is only a 6, but inside spread of almost 18 inches. I shot him, right behind him came a super narrow 8 or 10 point, he was running hard but I do not think he was 'legal'.

Regardless, that was the cheapest hunting I have ever done. That 6 is one of my favorite deer to date!

This.. And might want to ask how many hunters they have a year and how many bucks are taken off that ranch a year and if there are any size restrictions. I think size and age restrictions are good because it shows that the land owner cares about his deer herd not just making some easy money. Ask for recent kills and trail cam pics before you sign up. See if the trail cam pics are up to date. If so, you know he is serious about getting you on a deer. As far as price goes.. You get what you pay for IMO. Good luck

I was without a lease last year and looked very hard at some management hunts. It wasn't hard to find 120" class hunts that included a doe, 2-3 days, for around $1200, plus tip. I'm sure you could find some even cheaper.

If you are a gambling man, you can try for standby on some of the drawn public hunts. The better buck hunts, the odds of getting standby are so-so. Most of the Antlerless and management hunts, all or most of the standbys get picked. The three day hunts I think are $75 if you hunt and the 5 day hunts are $135.

There are very good day hunts out there. Check each city's chamber of commerce web page. Lots have whole sections on hunting. My dad does a hunt every year where he gets a management buck and a doe for $900 including a VERY nice camp house. I think they go for 3-4 days. I've gone a couple times and had a great time. You just need to search around. There are lots of good folks out there that need help with does/culls.
