I am looking for some advice here on what you guys do. I have a 5 year old, almost 6 that is dying to get in the Deer stand with me. I do have a ground blind and may take him a couple times. I am fully aware that the chances of us seeing anything is near 0 as a 5 year old can't sit still and quiet very long. If for some bizarre chance we were to see anything, is he allowed to take aim with some shooting sticks? What is the opinion on the age to take them along? Do they require a license or tags?

I have been taking my daughter since she was 3. Make sure you take snacks, water and entertainment. I think it is a great idea to get them in the woods and a bonus if you get to see some animals.
As far as shooting, that depends on the kid IMO. Some are ready before others. My daughter loves to shoot, but is no where near ready to shoot at a deer. We will both know when she is.
If you are going to let him shoot, need to purchase a youth license.

Carpet the inside of your blind then insulate the walls. You'll be surprised what you'll see even if your little one is int the stand wit you. I had the wife, an 11yr old a 13yr old and a a dog all in the stand with me last season. We saw a 5 bucks walk with in 15 to 60 yards of the blind. I'd advise to not let anyone eat anything that makes them gassy though. Close quarters can be deadly.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Good Information. That makes me feel a little bit better. If any one else has an opinion, I would love to hear it.

Take a blankee, snacks and entertainment. Enjoy your time together and be patient. txshntr is right....all kids are different as to when they are ready. Trust me your kid probably doesn't care at this point whether he shoots or not....its about being with daddy doing big boy stuff. Good luck.
oh and you definitely will need a youth license. only $7.

I've been taking my son since he was 4 & regardless if he's quite or if you see anything, enjoy it. While my son huts very close to me I still miss him being in stand with me although we made it a ritual every opening day he and I hunt together.
Have fun while you can!

This is all my opinion, so daddys with little kids don't yell at me.
I went to the stand with my dad to go hunting since well before I was 5, it was great and we always saw deer.
I think 5 is too young for the kid to be doing the trigger pulling. I think they need to understand more about hunting than I feel they are capable of at 5 years old. Also I think it is about the worst idea in the world to hand the gun over to a 5 year old who probably hasn't been practicing to shoot at deer.
Take him with you and he will have a blast but let him grow before he starts actually doing the hunting.
It's hell eatin em live

I agree with the carpet and insulated wall, escpecially if its a smaller blind. When I had my boy in our smaller blind he would try and lay down and seemed like he would always end up kicking a wall and in the quiet deer woods it seemed like a bomb would go off.. my boy killed his 1st deer at 9 years old and had been sitting in the blind with me a couple years prior..

Also agree with 5 being too young to pull the trigger, they need to observe a couple years and be at least 8 or 9 imo..

Take him to the stand. I killed my biggest deer to date with my daughter in the stand when she was five years old. I had just let her pee in the corner of the popup ground blind. I had been hunting this deer hard all season and finally gave up and said I am taking her with me. It actually is the reason i killed that deer that day. I completely changed my setup and used a popup that had been in my shop all season.
My daughter shot her first deer at age 7 and my son at age 5. He was ready and she wasn't. I let him pull the trigger early because he had been practicing and sitting all year long. He had probably been with me to the stand 10 times or more.
Each child is different though.

Along with what others have said, if you take the kid along, make it a short hunt. Don't make them sit with you from 6AM to 10AM, just take them for an hour the first time. At that age I would have been dying to go and begging constantly, but then bored out of my skull by the reality that nothing was happening for most of the hunt.
Taking me rabbit hunting was a much better thing than deer hunting for everyone involved. Same with fishing - 10 scrawny bluegill was much more fun than the one 3 pound trout that all the older folks thought was so great. Catching just a single fish, no matter the size, qualified as a rather poor fishing trip in my mind.
When you get done with the hunt, let the kid shoot some tin cans or paper targets. Doesn't have to be the deer rifle - bring the .22 or even a pellet gun. I remember being far more interested in just pulling the trigger than in killing something at that age.

He shot this hog 1 month prior to his 6th Birthday at 35 yds out of a bow blind using sticks. 257 Weatherby Mag. See that little semi U shaped smudge at the back of his jaw. That was the entrance wound. IT was the right time, right place, right feel of the situation and it was just time to let him try. He had been shooting his own red rider all year and had been practicing with a Marlin 22 mag. He had even shot several rabbits with it. Each kid is different. You just know when they are ready. Here he is at 11 with his best buck taken with a high shoulder shot at 209 yards. This year at 12 yrs old he is putting the rifle up for a year and going bowhunting exclusively...so he says. We will see at Thanksgiving.

He is not ready to shoot but he will have fun seeing deer. And if big boy shows up... DADDY drop the hammer!

That is all wonderful information. I really appreciate it. I will take him a few times to sit in the blind and continue to let him do some practicing before taking a shot.

My son is 17 and has been hunting with me since he was ~6. Here's how I did it:
1) When he's with you, serious hunting is not your objective, so don't worry about extra noise, movement, etc. You'll still be surprised at what you might see anyway.
2) Comfort is important - snacks, drinks, etc. When you know he's bored, go on a still hunt - kids love to explore.
3) Start him w a BB gun; he'll feel like he's actually part of the hunt & can shoot at targets outside the blind, tweeties, etc. Also a good way to start him on gun safety. Can graduate to a .22 for squirrels & rabbits, and step up in caliber and game as appropriate.
4) Even if he's not going to be shooting, still get him a license. They're cheap and it will make him feel like special, like he's one of the "big guys".
5) Bring hearing protection for him, in case you do shoot.
6) Bring a couple of game calls. It's a great way for him to be active in the hunt. Imagine how thrilled he'd be if he even thought that he had actually called in a deer or coyote!
7) ENJOY THIS TIME. There's nothing else like it!

He had never met my future wife until that day when he accidentally went to her stand. So, he climbed up in there with her and had bad gas. I almost never saw her again.

When you decide to take the little one along, make it about the experience and them. I was amazed how much movement and noise we made and the deer didn't even pay attention. Of course carpet on the bottom of the stand knocks down a lot of noise.
If/when you are going to shoot. Be sure to take along some ear protection for them. I shot my gun outside of the stand several times so that my little one knew what it sounded like.
Cherish the memories of taking them hunting..

I can't emphasize enough that you be patient with the kiddos. Try to keep them fed and busy. Some parents opt out for bringing along electronic gadgets. I don't allow them. This is quality time for me and my kids. There are plenty of natural things we can talk about to keep their interest high Gonna be hard to keep our 6 year old out of the deer stand this year. After busting clays and shooting his first dove, he's ready for some 4 legged critters. And he has no problem shooting a rifle. Our daughter shot her first deer this past season at 9 years old. She just hasn't spent as much time in the field and shooting. It happened when she was ready.

My son made his first trek with me at 5. Ground blind, plenty of snacks and carried his .22 with us. Let him shoot a couple rabbits and birds from the stand. Wasn't too concerned about seeing big deer that weekend but as luck would have it he got to see a 160+ 3 year old we'd been seeing on and off all year. He was exstatic when that buck stepped out and stayed in front of us for 1/2 hour. Kept telling me to shoot it so it gave me the opp to talk to him about management

I will be trying to put my daughter on a deer this year. Two years ago when she was seven she missed the only deer we saw. Then last year not one deer was seen. Moved to another place this year so hopefully she will have some redemption. She will be nine this November. And I agee you will know when he or she will be ready I knew she was ready I had been taking her since she was four. So just get him in the woods they will have a blast just being with daddy!!!
