bought this Rem 700 .308 with a Pentax 2.5x10x56 scope last fall and we love it !

Around $500 invested

if youre going for hogs a 280 or 243 is a better option

I use the Remington Varmint in .308 with 168 grain AMax for hogs. The gun is a bit heavy to tote around, but it's never let me down. The 168 AMax destroys the pigs and all mine have been DRT.

I've killed hogs with everything from 17 HMR to 7MM Mag. In my opinion, a .223 does just fine. Virtually no recoil, and just about any age can shoot it without jumping the trigger. Heck, here is my 9 year old daughter killing a 300 pounder with a .223, DRT. Other videos of my kids shooting the .223 at hogs on the same youtube channel.

I own a .243, two .308s, and a 30-30. I have put down far more pigs with the 30-30 than anything else.

As to calibers, I feel you are on the right path with the 30 cal. I would not recommend a .223. If that is all I had, I would run with it. Buying new, the .308 you are looking at would be a good choice in bolt guns. 7mm-08 would be my next choice.

Prices have been going up, but if you are not stuck on Remington, I would look at Howa 1500 and Weatherby Vanguard too (both built on Howa receivers). Good, accurate, budget guns.

Are you 100% sold on the REM700? If so, I agree with the previous response, that any 700 will kill hogs. Just go to your local dealer and put your hands on a few models and see which one feels the best to YOU. If you're not sold on the 700, there are plenty of other makes out there, within your price range that are as good and/or better choices (Tikka,CZ,Savage)just name a few. good luck on putting together a pig gun, and let us know what you end up with.

I was looking for a Remington 700 SPS Tactical. I found an FN SPR A1 (Special Police Rifle) with a Shepherd 6-18x40 on top. It is a very sweet shooter.

Rem 700 SPS SS, put a good trigger in it and leupold 3-9, 2-7, or similar and start blasting! I wouldn't go the 6-18 scope unless you want to shoot them from far away... Let the type of hunting you do determine your optics.

Remington 742 carbine in 30/06 with a good 2x7 scope makes an outstanding close range hog gun. I am defining close range as the distance from 1 foot to 250 yards. They are light and fast. Add a ten round clip (I carry several) and you will never need to go to the heavy black guns. I like the 750 carbine in .308, as well...same setup. Personally, I prefer bolt action guns for everything but hogs, particularly when you walk into a pile of those rascals and they run at you instead of away from you...the black .308s weigh in around 12 pounds without a scope...almost twice as heavy as the rig I suggest. From time to time Cabelas will have some 35Rem 750 carbines on the used racks....I don't own that caliber but would do so, if I went to hunt black bear.

Everyone I hunt with does....backstraps and hams on the spit...Its whats for dinner...along with some rattlesnake, dove, and whatever else we muster up.

You can beat the hell out of it and it/you will never care. If you ever decide you want a nicer gun, simply change the stock and your set.

The 308 definitely has enough mass and velocity to get the job done on a hog.
