showing my ignorance on this topic, is this wheat? if so i guess i didnt think it would grow somewhere this thick and shaded. i picked up a new lease, it is 100 acres of creek bottom and pretty much the entire thing looks like this, its 3-4ft tall....

that would make sense, we have some more land out there down the creek and during the season there is a carpet of rye grass on it, but it has cows on it that i guess keep it from looking like this side. thanks

there are large ag fields on the west side of this place, could this just be volunteer seed that has worked its way across this place through the trees?

no wonder the deer dont give a rip about corn out there.

Don't know . I've hunted a lease in Comanche that had wild plants like those that grew here and there .. Always played tricks on my eyes during sunrise . Always looked like deer moving past . Lol

I love hunting ! Got to love it !

1.Wheat requires a lot of sun. 2. Deer and hogs would have mowed it down. 3. It would have had to be planted to be that thick. if early spring it has a purple tint it's ryegrass. A annual weed, deer don't like it.

Its rye. Not wheat

Pretty sure this is correct. Although it could be a different species of Elymus (wildrye). Several of them look quite similar and it is hard to be certain without seeing it in person and keying it out.

Up my way rye comes in a glass bottle with a purple cloth bag and the words "Crown Royal" stitched on the bag. Best served on ice or with Canada Dry. Not surprised that the deer like it. wink

Wild Rye it is only a preferred deer food for a few weeks after it first sprouts. If it's grazed heavily or mowed the season can be extended but it's hard to get more than about 6 weeks out of it. Up here in MN it's a very important early spring food.
