Several have expressed interest, and I've been meaning to plan a trip, so here we go.

Our best bet will be an over the counter hunt in Colorado for rifle season, so we'll go with that. Which unit or national forest we go to can be determined as we discuss this. I'll do some research, and we can all talk about it, to figure out where will be best.

This gives us a year to plan out details and arrangements, and plan for time off, etc. A week will be best, including travel time, to allow for work schedules and still have a decent amount of time to hunt, though people can show up and leave on their own if that doesn't work for them.

I've never put together a group hunt like this, so I'm open to suggestions. I'm not in charge of everything. I'm just getting the ball rolling and attempting to organize this. All ideas are welcome, and we'll have to do our best to keep in mind this is a group of random people, so getting everyone on the same page won't be easy. In order to make do for the best of the group, some individuals may be excluded. That's just how this sort of thing works. Basically, a majority decision will be made, and those that can go, will.

I have no idea how many people will be able to go, or how many is too many for this type of hunt. I suspect a lot of people will show interest, but only a few will end up actually going. If you plan to fend for yourself, then it's not a big deal. If you plan to carpool, share a camper, or do anything that someone else depends on your participation or vice versa, then your commitment needs to be a solid one. We have plenty of time to nail down dates, locations, and details, but when that time comes, let your yes be yes, and your no, no. I understand extenuating circumstances come up, but the more we plan now, the more we can minimize that.

So, lets discuss this, and see if we can't get a hunt put together. I know there's a lot of first timers looking for an opportunity like this to get their feet wet. It would be nice to get a couple veterans involved to show them the ropes.

I can't go but would like to.

Think I'd consider setting a max number to keep it manageable.

If you're interested and have questions, ask away. This is not a whitetail hunt, so you may need to make some changes in your gear. I'll put a list of my gear together and explain what I think is essential and what is just nice to have.

Considering it. I'm thinking if we get more than the max number interested, we can split up into two groups. What is a reasonable number?

Rifle season is in October. Seeing as how the current elk season is just underway, we'll have to wait for dates.

I think I'd shoot for 6, maybe 8 max.

Actually, I just looked, and the dates are posted for 2014. October 18-26. So we would probably leave sometime on the 17th and come back on the 23rd.

Bull tags will be around $600, and cow tags about $360.

I'd limit the number to 6 or so folks.

Also, I would make it a early bow or muzzle loader season hunt to lesson the pressure.

I was there last year in sept. and there were enough bow and muzzle loader hunters to not make me wanna try the rifle season

That's what I was thinking. Then we could split up to hunt in groups of 2-3.

I've done both. Rifle season is easy, because 90% of the hunters are either too lazy or inexperienced to get in my way. The roads will be crawling with hunters. The tops will have a few guys on horses. Everything in between is left to a few individuals that know how to hunt and are willing to put forth the effort. I rarely see people where I hunt.

Some of the guys may be up for it, but most will probably want a DIY hunt to minimize costs. We can see if the interest is there.

I'd be interested in a private land hunt if the price was right

Problem most people will have is initial gear set up. Pack, tent, etc. Especially if you go deep way of the roads..

I'm hunting again with TNT in 2 weeks ill check and see what price break he might give 6 of us

Please do. I'd be very interested in hooking up with TNT if we can get a 6 person special.

I know it.

Check and see. That might work.

This sounds like a great idea. I'm definitely in for a rifle season hunt, once we firm up dates. I have backpacking gear and experience with a map and compass so I don't mind having to hike a ways in to get to the good hunting.

An elk hunt is something I want to do before I start an adult life. I would Be very interested but would do rifle only. It would be nice to do as a group cause we could talk and plan it out.

Hate to see hunters dollars going to CO until they change the political atmosphere. My money is going to NM this year

The way this is going, we may have enough for two different hunts. An outfitted bow hunt, and a DIY rifle hunt. Keep talking and list your preference so we can get a better idea.

And you'll probably get it back when you don't draw. Colorado is the most logical place for a hunt like this. I'm not going to let the state's politics keep me from it.
