Yep, Rat Snake although Grandma called them chicken snakes and would chase them with her broom when she wasn't riding it. They hang around the chicken house looking for rats and mice that eat the chicken feed.

Rat snake, had one come up between my legs while working out a couple weeks ago, about gave me a heart attack. He was hiding inside the weight stack, when the plate came up he lifted his head, almost to say "wuzzz upp", with me running off screaming. Bad thing is this gym has cameras and so all of the staff got replay my reactions and then jokes started rolling in.

Yep, you guys got it right. Texas Rat Snake (Pantherophis obsoletus lindheimeri). I fished one out of a chicken coop last year that the homeowner swore was the invasive Brown Tree Snake from Australia.

Looks like a rat snake to me. I have heard from an herpatologist that rat snakes are very easy to agitate. I'm surprised that it didn't bite you. Must be the cooler weather.
Be kind with your words, thankful to your Creator and generous with the meat from your hunt.

They are definitely easy to agitate!!! I killed 3 of them in the last 3 months eating eggs in my chicken coop and they were not to happy to be bothered!!!

Absolutly, rats are in the king snake family, and kings will swollow a rattler that is the same length as the king. They are actually voracious eaters of alot of things we want gone. Skinner

We called them chicken snakes as well. It was real fun reaching into the chicken coop before sun up and finding one of those where eggs were supposed to be.

Wish I would have had a cam on me but didn't. My daughter and I pulled over to the side Friday and watched a crow and a rat snake go at it. It was pretty cool I've never seen a crow trying to kill a snake but that snake wasn't going down easy.

They do get pretty big. My brother and I had one for years that got to around 6 feet. Dad was never happy when he got out in the house.
