Well, I’ve done it on occasion but this past weekend I received a citatation from game warden for littering. Don't know about anyone else but I didn't ever think this was a that bad a thing. I figured it was me using a resource that my tax dollars help pay for and I didn't see it as a big deal. Apparently it is a big deal and I am not going to that anymore. Anyone else have any experience or comments on this?

I think I would have to fight with the judge on that. There is probably nothing notifying you not to do it and it is public. So what's the big deal?

A lot of the roadside parking areas have a sign when you pull in saying No Household Trash. It would be my guess that he considered that household trash but littering????? You put it in the container not sure I wouldnt fight this one.

As long as it wasn't guts or like a large trashbag I'd say it was ok. But yeah, littering sounds like the wrong infraction.

We have a road side stop that we have put our trash at for 4 years. It has two big trash cans, thought that is what they were for. I think that I would have to question that ticket.

Did you actually put the trash in the barrel or did you set it on the ground next to it because it was full?

There is a very small roadside park on Hwy. 84 east of Star that has a small mountain of trash bags, corns sacks, etc, from hunters that have dropped them off on their way home every weekend. I don't think it would be THAT much of an inconvienence to take it home or drop it in an actual dumpster somewhere.

Well I guess I go against the grain on this. We pass a rest area just out of Menard everytime we go to the lease and nearly everytime, there are bags of trash piled up there. On opening weekend, there is enough to fill a dump truck. One weekend we saw a sherif watching from about a 1/4 mile down the road. He was watching a guy put some bags out, I guess he wrote him a ticket. I know that our tax dollars help pay for these rest area, but I don't think it is right to dump your trash there. Can you imagine someone else needing to stop there to eat lunch or just stretch their legs while on a trip We either burn ours at the lease, what will burn and take the rest home or when stopping to buy fuel ask the store clerk if we can use their dumpster. We have never been turned down on useing the dumpster. Not jumping on anyone or running anyone down, just telling what we do with our trash. As for as the ticket goes, I think your stuck with that one. I know several DPS guys and a few deputies and they all say that a littering ticket is the hardest to get out of. Good luck!

I personlly don't do it, it is not that I don't think is right or not, but I bring the camp trash home to be thrown away. I past a couple of rest stops on I-20 but never stop. I only travel a 1 1/2 hr from home to the lease, and it generally 1 bag of trash. I see where you are coming from about the tax dollars, but I see to many times the barrels are running over and on the ground, I can't see adding to that. JMO.

I don't think you should have gotten a ticket, maybe a warning citation at the most. I pack all my stuff back to the house with me... and then some.
I also catch a lot of ribbing from the "outlaws" for leaving the campsite cleaner that what I found it. It really chaps my hide to watch these guys throw candy wrappers and other trash on the ground... throughout the lease. I don't cause anymore trouble for myself by saying anything about it to them, but where I camp and park is CLEAN! Not even a butt on the ground gets left behind. I need a new lease... and if I could afford another one as good... I'd be gone. These guys have no heart for the sport or the land.
With some thought, you will understand that each of us is the sum total of those who came before us...

I know the exact spot you are talking about! I always thought that it looked bad with all that trash piled up. If you noticed a greasy looking furry spot about 100 yards up the road from there I can identify it as a former jack rabbit that was slower than my truck.

In the past I have dropped small amounts of trash into the trash barrels of roadside parks when I am out for a day or so. But I always figured that dropping off a camp full of trash would probably be more than the containers were intended for. Besides, convenience stores, gas stations, etc. that benefit from our patronage always have dumpsters available that they pay to empty. I kinda look at it like it's fair that they get my empties. And since they empty them a little quicker than the parks, coons and skunks don't have a chance to spread trash around.

Just as a word of caution, placing trash in someone's dumpster *without their permission* is technically considered theft of services and can get you a ticket; I have a family member who's a LEO, and he's cited people for doing this.

Yea, the park has a sign that says no household garbage. I dropped off a 30 gal garbage bag. The can was full and there were several other bags beside the can, so that's where I put mine. My garbage contained only cans and bottles, the things that wouldn't burn. I usually encourage my brother to take the trash because he has access to a huge dumpster at his house/company but I was the last one out of camp and had to take it this time. It sucks to get a fine for this but my main reason for posting is to warn others that you can/will be ticketed for it. Even is you think no one is watching, Don't do it! This warden was sitting on private property (no vehicle) across from the raodside park in the brush, he was hunting for people that do this very thing, and he got me...

What hacks me off about this: Is this all we have for a Game Warden to do at this time of the season? To sit and watch over a trash can??? Seems like a huge waste of tax money to turn a Game Warden into the "Trash Police"

I was thinking the same thing but in the future; I will heed the suggestions to either take the trash home or ask an establishment permission to use their waste receptacle.
And, in and effort to think of solutions: seems like if the state views this as a problem maybe they would be receptive to "special dump stations" in the hill country towns that are predisposed to this problem. Seems like after x-mas there are places to take your x-mas tree, so why can't there be dumpsters to assist hunters with this problem. It's probably not going to happen but just an idea.

No offense but I'd have to agree with you getting a ticket. I pass three road side stops on my way to and from my lease. I have never seen one that didn't have a huge pile of trash around a full barrel on my ride home. What irks me the most is that the majority of the time if there is a truck stopped there dropping of trash, the person usually is decked out in camo and is pulling a trailer with coolers and 4 wheelers. I guess that extra bag of trash overloads the trailer.
[climbs on soapbox] IMO it's poor representation and just plain laziness for a group (hunters) that is supposed to be about preserving our natural resources. [/climbs off soapbox]

Well, put! I couldnt have said it better.. WE either take it home or put it in the dumpster(with permission of course) I ticks me off to see all of that garbage piled up at the roadside parks..

There is a roadside park on the highway near my ranch and come hunting season it is always a mess. All kinds of camp trash including deer carcases.
The places I've leased to hunters, I have a backhoe dig a deep pit (about $100 or about $35 to $50 if the operator is in the area) and tell the hunters to put everthing in it but DON'T burn it. I will do that.
The hunters on a lease might approach the landowner about letting them have one dug and then there is no more hauling trash home. I would want the landowner to burn it though so there is no issue with burning a pasture.

That's a good idea. We took over a lease 3 years ago that had been run down. The family does not hunt, and puts little into it. We cleaned the camp up and have a lot of stuff that needs to be burned and/or buried. I am going to ask about doing this and hopefully the landowner will pay for the digging. I would gladly fence the hole to keep cattle out to have a place for trash.
We gently burn what we can, but sometimes the weather or travel plans won't allow us to burn anything.
I don't know about the issue of dumping at a rest area. Are we traveling? Just don't know. I know I wouldn't leave it now after hearing of this, but I am not sure what to think of it. If you can't put trash in there, why is it there? (No, not household, but camping trash)

Paid my fine for "littering" yesterday, it cost me $112.00. Take my advice and don't do it cause they are cracking down.

Pack out what you take in. We (you, them, us) can't be this lazy to take our trash home and dispose of it property.

I may be wrong, which is no surprise to anyone over 5 years old, but I think where the problems come in, is when bags either plastic trash bags or empty corn sacks are placed on the ground outside of the litter barrels. Also, what is the difference between household garbage and camp garbage. Isn't a deer camp basically a mobile or non-permanent house hold. Isn't the contents of the garbage pretty much the same. Used paper towels, empty egg cartons, empty plastic bags from vegetables, beverage containers. Some folks don't try and burn everything that they can in their campfire, they put it in regular trash bags or empty corn sacks. You go past some of the roadside parks and it is unbelievable the amount of trash and the type of trash that will be setting around those trash cans. This might be something that should be addressed in lease agreements, trash disposal.

We call ourself the good spotsmanship on how we harvest an animal, then maybe we should't leave our trash for others to pick up.
