I have never been a great shot but I am beginning to wonder if my barrel length/choke choice is throwing me off. I use a 23" rem 870 turkey for everything. I have a full or imp cyl for it. Does the shorter barrel change the choke need?

Have you ever shot the same shotshell against a large paper target with either choke? Could have holes in your pattern.
How are you gonna shoot a squirell if you're lookin at your feet?

I shoot and extended mod at everything and never change it cause I don't need too. I have a youth 20ga with a 20" barrel my nephew shoots, Briley extended mod waterfowl choke patterns so much better than any factory choke.
Stickin' gills and Stackin' bills
In a world of compromise..... some dont....

23 inches is a might short for wing shooting.
Most wingshooters are running 26-28" barrels.
Sporting Clays, which is supposed to be the clay game most like actual wing shooting, has evolved to where many people use a 30 or even 32 inch barrel.
I am more consistent with longer barrels. Your mileage may vary.
Given those two choke choices for doves, IC all the way.
Thought for the day: Ducks were almost hunted to extinction long before camo was invented.

I would think of changing your barrel length before anything. Better feel when swinging the gun. As long as a gun has good fit and swing, then with practice you will be alright. There is no difference in shooting a full choke out of a 23" barrel and a full choke out of a 28" barrel. That being said, use the choke to match your situation of hunting. I've shot a full choke at doves many times before. High flyers of course

Does the shorter barrel change the choke need? Hey scot, you can't blame your misses on the gun. That's just excuses haha

Does the shorter barrel change the choke need? Nope. Shorter barrels are more difficult to have a fluid swing and follow through with. If you are having trouble shooting consistently then chances are you are either jerking around or stopping your swing. Use the IC, watch your shot distance and maintain a constant swing and follow through after the shot. There's some decent info in this: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=620232
