I say a single reed Louisianna style wooden Faulks call. Just over $20 shipped to your door. Easy to blow does everything you will need. I have had it for years, still love the call.

HAHAHAHAHAHA Too Funny!!! You can get a Duck Commander call for about 30 bucks. Why is that funny? I've killed loads of ducks using a whistle. Duck camander calls suck, at least the $30 do. Heard their duck picker was ok, but its not $30. Quack head makes an ok call for a beginner, get the double reed, and get you a cheap buck garner whistle. After you can do simple quacks and work some others in with it get an RNT timber or a similar mid price call, then go from there.

For some reason, every haydels call I have ever bought smells terrible out of the package.

I wasn't kidding about a whistle, if your just now going to start trying to run a call you won't be ready by this season and will do more harm than good, but a whistle on the other hand is simple and something that ducks don't hear all the way from Canada. I'm not saying to not get a call, but I wouldn't expect to get ducks dumping in on you

For some reason, every haydels call I have ever bought smells terrible out of the package. They use recycled plastic. But they still sound decent. I carry their big barrel version of the dr-85, dont use it much, but its on the lanyard. I say a single reed Louisianna style wooden Faulks call. Just over $20 shipped to your door. Easy to blow does everything you will need. I have had it for years, still love the call. All you need to get started, but you have to learn how to use them BEFORE you go hunting. I always tell people to start with a whistle. More ducks whistle than quack anyways, but everyone thinks of the mallard call first, because you can get volume and distance with the call. and PLEASE learn to use them before going out in the field. Go to a park that has park ducks and listen to them, then mimic them. Save all of us out in the field. Please.

Thats the one I started with, not the best, but damn sure not the worst. If you can roll your R's at all, you can make really good pin tail calls with a Buck Gardner Whistle.Of course it does teal peeps, widgeon, and drake mallard too.

If it has a reed its a call, not a whistle

My dad still uses an old referee whistle with the ball taken out.
I prefer the wingsetter.

so yea, any whistle will do.

No one is really pointing out the that the whistle attracts teal. And its the easiest call to do and still will net other birds. Start with one of the 4 in one calls.
I can recommend against a mallard magic and double nasty for first mallard call.
The Classic Commander isn't bad. Not as loud as some.

Haydell DR85 and a Duck Commander whistle. Use the whistle 80% of the time. It's ridiculous to see all these guys trying to blow a single reed. Practice alot in your car. If you think you sound bad, you do. Record yourself. Please don't add to the noise polution already out there . Hunt during the week so you can learn how the birds react.
