Oldest documented buck was on the Jambers Ranch and IRRC he was 21+yrs old at death. Born in the wild. At an old age by any standard(10 or 12 or so IRRC) when lost all his teeth he became gentle and was hand fed daily to keep him alive till he died.

His posture from the way his is standing and in those cool temps makes him look a bit older also.

Here is a buck that I know was 3 yrs older in this pic than the first time I saw him. When I first saw him I thought he was 6 or 7 at least.

That same ranch had a doe on it that was radio collared by CKWRI back in the mid 80's. She was still alive in '99 and if she was tagged as a doe fawn she was at least 14 yrs old. This ranch was LF and around 50k at the time the study was done.

I would think generally 8.5-9.5 is how old they'll get if not shot AND have to survive on their own. Some older, some younger. I also think usually 6.5 will be their peak & diminish as they get older than that. These are general rules, not set in stone.

I was hunting a WMA one time on a drawn hunt and saw a doe with a blue tag in her ear. When I got back to the check station I asked the Biologist about it. He said "wow, we tagged those deer 11 years ago". He couldn't believe I had seen one still walking. To be honest she didn't look ancient to me. If not for the ear tag I would have thought she was 4 or 5 years old.

Sure some may live that long, but they don't all. Found a 5 year old last year dead and 2 years before found a 4 year old dead, both by the tank after season.

He was a 9 last year after always being an 8.
Curious because we were still in one of the worst droughts of all time.
