My buddy told me last weekend that his place was eat up w/ hogs and that we needed to slip off down there and poke a hole in a few of them.. Well, we decided that since Wed. was going to be a "snow day" that we would head down early.. So I leave my house about 345am and get to Kevins about 5. load my guns and we are off. The front just passed and it was 29degrees and it was raining pretty hard. We looked at each other and knew it would be a long ride home on the ice, but decided that we really wanted to shoot some pigs..
Three and half hours later we arrive with 2 sacks of corn.. We corn a couple of spots on the roads. Shoot man, there are deer running out of everywhere to get to this corn. I mean, we didnt get 50 yds down the road and they were coming out of the wood work. We saw 10 bucks that would score over 120bc and several more that will, if left to grow. nice to look at but we were mad at the hogs not deer.
anyway back to hogs, we see one sow in the brush, but she hauls *****. We make the rest of the lap and on the way back we see 2 medium sized boars.. we stop and I jump out and before I can make it to the back of the pickup, Kevin picks up his 10/22 and drops both of these hogs in their tracks. I couldnt believe it.. put it right in their ear.. we exchange high fives and load em up.. Ok that was easy, lets get some more. Sure enough, in the next pasture we see a big black and white sow w/ piggies. we get out and stalk up on us, but the north wind was swirling around and she busted us and off she went. We go and rattle for a while and see a couple of nice young bucks.. move over the hill and see two more pigs, but decide not to shoot as we were about 500 yds from the truck.. It was now noon and agreed we had to leave by 130-2pm at the latest, because we knew that it would be icing up on the way back to DFW.
So we make another lap and see lots more deer and then more hogs. jump out of the truck and stalk again, we both ease up behind them, and Kevin shoots
Pa--whop! (he is using his 7mm mag now) I see a nice sow and lay her down with my trusty savage 99e .243.
Then this gnarly looking mottled colored boar comes by and Kevin makes a great shot on the run.. We gut the two sows and inspect the boar, he had been fighting and had a bunch of open cuts.. so he became coyote and buzzard feed.. it is now 145p and WE are heading to the gate when we see about 15 hogs.. I pick out a small 30-40lbr and popped him. quick gut job and we are out the gate by 2:05pm. its 26 degrees but dry so we haul buns north and didnt run into too many problems, mainly the big rigs were having a hard time get up those hills and jacknifing all over the place. Now the skinning will begin as soon as the temps get above freezing. Back home by 930pm. It was a great day of hunting with a friend that Ive know since I was 3yrs old..

I am quite sure that there is a bourbon glazed mesquite smoked ham in my future.. I have to wait for them to thaw out enough to skin them.. Still hanging in the backyard.. I think it will warm up enough to get em done tomorrow..I kept two and sent the other 3 to syracuse. Oh yeah, we would have stayed the night, but Kevin was already in the dog house for going hunting in the 1st place, so we figured we could get in and out in about 4hrs.. and make it close to home before dark..(which we did) here is the final product!
