Fellas, I've got a Franchi AL-48 in .20 gauge. Love it. Lightweight, swings well.
Lightweight......
Therein lies my issue. It kicks some, and all it has is a plastic buttstock.
I tried the limbsaver, but it threw off the LOP so bad I returned it.
I don't wanna cut the stock, and honestly if I could just add a 1/4 inch of cushioning, I really believe that's all I'd need.
Any thoughts, advices and opinions greatly welcomed.

Pachmar (sp) makes a grind your own recoil pad that may work for your application. I did this a while back on a rifle and the second recoil pad I ground down worked great. The first one was a learning experience Just take your time, measure twice and grind once and it will look good and work great. I don't recall how thick the pad was though, so you might look into that to keep the correct LOP.
Having said that, shot placement is key and there is only one level of dead. Us east Texans can't afford turquoise and elk ivories for jewelry. So we use hog tushes and coon peckers.

Your recoil pad has to be thick enough to cushion the screws used to mount the pad, and this may be your problem in trying to use a aftermarket pad. Getting a phillips screw shoved into your shoulder will multiply the effect of the recoil.

Well, another thought popped in my head. Looking at the DU mouse pad sitting on my desk. It's approximately a 1/4 inch thick.
If I could trace my existing butt stock onto this, cut and find a glue that would bond the material of the mouse pad to plastic, it might work.

I saw a recoil pad made from a section of garden hose. It would probably fit right in if you hunt deep East Texas.

Pretend I am anonymous. I took a flip flop cut it out and applied it with gorilla glue on a very rough looking M44 Carbine. It looked right and helped tame those 7.62X54R. Easy to find black in whatever thickness you want. I like your mousepad idea, but the fabric eventually peels off of all I have had. Good Luck Janie.

That's a heckuva idea. Material ought to be soft but plenty durable.

Janie, I say get a limbsaver or some other pad, have the stock cut to account for the recoil pad and make it fit. You have a nice shotgun and it is YOURS! Make it fit you and enjoy it!

The problem is that a pad on the stock does not add much if any area to the butt to spread the recoil energy. Take that mouse pad and sew it into the shoulder of a oversized shirt or vest and it will tame things without affecting length of pull much and works for any gun. I use an old knee pad in a sleeveless old USMC camo blouse because it approximates the length of pull in my winter coat more than than for recoil, but it sure makes working up a load more pleasant.
