I help manage some beautifull farm property around Uvalde TX. for dove hunters and most of the people I have placed in the field are pretty good. This picture is the very trash items I picked up from a single group of four day hunters who disposed of these items as deep as they could into the cactus and brush along our fence lines. This group signed a waiver stating that they would pack out all of their garbage.

Nobody wants their property trashed, remember that unruly day hunters threaten the availabillity of accessable property to us all.If you intend to hunt Doves on another persons property (paid or not) remember that it is good etiquette to leave those fields cleaner than you found them (this would include picking up your hulls as well).

What would you expect from people that drink Lone Star and Miller Lite?

People are slobs. If you are making people pay to hunt you really have to just accept that. If you are letting people hunt your place for free or very cheap you can always tell them not to come back or give a strong warning...if they want to hunt bad enough they will clean up.

I'm pretty lucky to know enough people that I have never had to pay money for a dove hunt. I normally will pay in other ways like shells or beer. But because I don't have to pay I make damn sure I am not a slob on their place. I normally take extra time to not only try to pick up all my hulls and other trash but also pick up other loose trash. It's the old philosophy that you try to pack out more than you packed in and try to leave the place better than you found it. It only takes a little effort...but it does still take effort.

I've also found the cleaner the place is the more likely others will try to keep it clean. If I were a dove outfitter I would provide each group with a trash can and bags...it's a subtle way of saying please clean up after yourself without sounding like a jerk. You can also tell people that you are collecting cans and are selling them and using the funds to donate to charity...people may make an extra effort then.

Good Advice Marcstar, I think I will start handing out a 55 gal trash sack to every party. My release forms that my hunters sign now grant permission to charge their credit card at $80/hr to pick up any trash they left behind.

Being that you run a business...it would be really bad business to apply that charge unless it was really bad and you would not want those people back. I think sometimes when people pay to play they feel entitled as if others should be the ones cleaning up. As a whole because dove hunting is probably the easiest type of hunting for a nonhunting type to get into you probably have a lot of guys that just don't get the whole conservation and taking care of property thing.

Giving each group a trash bag is a good idea. Hunts I go on do that. I always try to pick up more than I take.

You can also have each person submit a DNA and then test the trash so you know where to send the bill.

If I had to pick up all that trash I'd be charging them. That is bullcrap to do to any piece of property.

Wayne...you would but then again you might not need the business. Depending on how bad you need business from hunters would determine the level of BS you can take. I think there are plenty of things you can do to set the tone in advance that people need to pick up without being a jerk about it. Most people...even slobs will pick up if they see that that's the think you do there.

I'm the type of person that is not good at telling people what to do...I'm not a manager. I'm also the type of person that does not like to be "told" what to do...hence I work for myself alone.

This is the type of thing slobs that also like to hunt need to hear. If you are an outfitter and not the property owner you can always say that the owner is very particular and if any trash is found he will kick us off the lease which will result in me losing money. But for most owners the trouble for a few bucks from leasing is not worth it.

I've had a few Day hunters leave some trash,,they were not allowed to come back the next year. 90% the guys I have now are really good guys that have hunted with me for years..

Day leasing is kinda like head boat fishing. Your better off to sell a hunt like a charter boat and make the rounds and be more one on one with your sports. I run that way and never have a problem with trash or hulls

That pisses me off to no end. One year, Bill and I filled up 5 trash bags. And nope. None of the garbage was ours.

Ruins it for everybody and probably why we don't have to place to hunt this year. Land owners are fed up with human pigs.

Thank You aeb & dogcatcher for making the point for this thread which I feel is eventually landowners will come to the conclusion that the liability and mess associated w/ a few day hunters will end the opportunity to hunt for all day hunters.

Hunting on someone else’s land (even paid hunts)need to be viewed as a privilege.

PS My business is Rope Access Training, I provide day hunters for the benefit of the landowner only who has become a friend of mine, I make no profit from this yet still take the initiative to pick up after the hunters I provide if necessary.

Last year I was very close to being physically attacked by a day hunter who believed that spent shotgun hulls did not represent trash....What do you consider spent hulls to be???

If it didn't grow there naturally, it's trash. Did you ask him why he was just leaving them if he didn't consider them to be trash?

If they are grown men and women its not your job to pick up after them. I would charge $100 and hr. to pick up there mess.

He said that he did not pick them up because he did not intend to re-load them and that the farmer told him it was ok (a lie that I verified w/farmer).
