Contemplating buying either a used Sako finnbear L61r In 30-06, or a Ruger model 77 in a .270. Sako is 650.00, comes with a luepold 3x9x40. The Ruger is 395.00, no scope but has rings. I'm leaning towards the Sako, but I really like Ruger as well, help me decide. Thanks

No contest. Sako, it's even chambered in the better cartridge of the two.

That's an extremely good price on the Sako the barreled action alone is worth $650. Even if the the rifles were equal you wouldn't be able to match the Leupold for $255.

Sako hands down. If you don't end up buying it, let me know. That's a good price.

That is a really good deal on the Sako combo. I have a Finnbear in 7mm that will shoot half dollar groups.

That is a smoking price on that combo. I don't care much for the 30-06, but would probably damage my shoulder getting to my wallet. Nice find!

OBTW....the SAKO was 3 times more expensive when it was new over the Ruger...and is still 3 times or more gun than the Ruger will ever be 30-40 years later. I can count the ways if you need for me to...an it starts with the hand built hand finished you name it craftsmanship that I can show you pictures of at the plant in Rihimaaki...

Even though Rugers are supposedly better built these days but there is still not even a close comparison...

What is the 'right' way to pronounce Sako - is it "Socko" or "Sayko"?

I have always said Sayko, but my buddy says he likes to sock 'em with his Socko.

Either way, to the OP, go with a Sako.

Sock-o is the proper pronunciation.

I am still trying to break my upbringing of Say-cos and Lee-a-polds.

I've got some of each, and the Sako has more quality to it. Closing the bolt on that Sako feels like you are locking down the door on a bank vault. It feels that smooth and solid. That said, I really like my Ruger rifles. In your case, I'd go for the Sako, as you plan to do.

Gunsmith bud of mine called them once, and pronounced it say-co. The woman on the phone said "we don't build cheap watches, we build fine rifles, its sock-o!"

Sako
We have two L579s from around 1960
A 22-250 and 243
Both will still shoot 200 yard 1/2" groups

I have a thing for old Sakos more than the current ones but they are all good.

That Sako is almost 30 years old. And could have issues. The Ruger just needs a new barrel to be perfect.

For the record I have two AV rifles a 30-06 and a 375. They are both great rifles Sako Fiberclass in great calibers.

I'd pick the Ruger. When some odd part fails on the Sako, what are you going to do?

Repair parts are generally available in the US for Sako. I personally haven't heard of any problems
