I've been duck hunting a few times, but always with someone else. I'm looking looking to go on my own a few times this year, and wanted to find out what I need. I know you can spend a ton of money, but what are the essentials that you really need (other than a gun and some birds)

1. Knowing where they want to be (go scouting) 2. Something to attract them (decoys and calls) 3. Something to shoot them with (gun and ammo) 4. Something to retrieve them (dog, boat, d-wadr, etc) 5. Something to keep you protected from the weather (waders, coat, gloves, hat, etc)
Everything else is just extra.
If you are going by yourself let someone know where you will be and take a phone in a zip-lock bag for emergencies.

Welcome to the forum. Read up on the post, there is lots of information for the rookies here. Decoys would be a good start, just a dozen to get you started Steelshot is a must
Team Hillbilly I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left. Paralyzed Veterans of America

Do you have a place to hunt? If you don't get the public permit and hurry up and get scouting. Otherwise, get some decoys, a call and learn howto do some basic calls. Get a dvd on caling orsomething. And although some say its cheating and it may fall under the extra category, a mojo may really help you to bring in some birds.Good Luck.

Scouting is the best tool a duck hunter has. You can have a great decoy spread and be a geat caller but if the birds aren't there then you will not kill manu birds.

im gonna enforce the scouting issue...
heres the best advice i can give: dont just scout and hunt the marsh or slough the birds are in, hunt the EXACT spot they are sitting when you spook them. the biggest error people have is not setting on the X and watch birds land 75 yrds away all morning.
I like spoonie, his humor is dryer than my duck lease.

welcome! you need to stay dry and comfy, a good spot with some quackers, and the patience to wait until you see the eyeballs before you shoot! My father taught me by giving me ONE 2-3/4in #4 steel shotshell at a time. nowadays I use 3in #4's and do pretty well on ducks. Hold still, wait till you see the beady eyes! TAKE 'EM
Wasn't born in Texas, but I got there as fast as I could.
