Whats the going rate in your area for a 50lb bag? Any word on price increases over the season?

i've seen 8.49-10.50/ 50 lbs. Heard of 7/bag, but i've been paying right at $9. Still buying last years crop and been told this years may roll in within the next 2-3 weeks potentially 1-1.50 less/bag.

Its located about 30 miles South of Columbus on Hwy 71. Oh, about 10-15 miles on this side of El Campo.

So, prob about 85 miles from Navasota.

Corn down there seems to be cheaper than what I can pay up here.
Will be around Mt. Pleasant in about two weeks. May need to buy a few bags if the price is right.

Any corn price reports for places in that area?

I know that this may not be an option for some folks, but you can buy it bulk straight from the field at $4.80/ bushel (56 lbs.).

We get it from same farmer every year, this year its $44 a drum and his plastic drums hold about 360lbs. He combines it and has a auger contraption coming off a auger wagon with some type of screen on it, so its always very clean.

I know it has been said on here several times, but be careful taking corn directly from the combine. Make sure it is tested for disease and make sure it isn't too wet.
I have personally always taken it from the combine and stored it in protein tubs (250lb containers) to use all winter and never had a problem with moisture (our corn is tested at grain elevator for disease or Aflatoxin so that part is always covered). However, this year has been above average moisture from south Oklahoma up into Kansas and even Nebraska. Last year we cut our corn on 8/4/2012 and this year it is still green.
With all that being said, I agree is it cheaper to talk with farmers and buy directly from them. Just make sure they have it tested for disease/Aflatoxin and make keep it ventilated if the moisture is too high.

Around here many farmer have handheld moisture meters, so they can get an idea what they have before they start. You make a great point, the farmer we buy from is shipping some and storing some, and they test it and if moisture is too high some places wont take it. They also test for aflatoxin as well

You are right, You will see them cut test strips first and check it.

The elevator will still take it with pretty high moisture content but farmer will get hit with a big discount/fee.

Most farmers don't store their corn unless they are pretty big operations. Plus you can't replant corn"use it for seed" like you can wheat.

Just becareful elevator storage is different then closed barrel storage. Elevator has ways of lowering the moisture, you don't. So what is acceptable to them might still mildew on you.

Never store corn in a plastic barrel
