Ok Im looking for 2 items. 1st is a good (budget friendly, 700.00 or under) Over/under. Mainly to be used as a dove, skeet, duck gun. Seen a few that come as combos including 12 and 20 gauge barrels.

Second is I am looking for a 22 that I can use for a few years and then hand down to my son. (Looking to create a heirloom of sorts.) I am torn between 10/22 or Henry GB. I feel the Henry has the nostalgic look, but so does the 10/22. Please feel free to throw in other options if you see fit.

Thanks for any ideas or options.

Hands down I would say the 10/22; you can buy the base model for around $200 and make a project out of fixing it up with all the different parts you want....if any.

I have several 10/22's and have already bought one for my girls. They are fun and can throw a lot of lead down range in a hurry. Great project guns and inexpensive to get into. Base models at $200. Accessories are readily available and there is no end to the amount of mods you can do to one. They are the Jeep Wrangler of guns!

Everyone should own a 10/22. But I taught my kids to shoot on a bolt action 22. That way they have to cycle it to rechamber a round. It makes them shoot properly, make the shot count, and not rush. They go from a manually cycled rifle to a 10/22, but not 10/22 first. Just something to think about.

Excellent advice. I have a single shot, bolt action .22LR I purchased from a forum member.

Honestly, I love the simplicity. It's accurate. You won't waste shells.

It's a keeper I hope to pass on, if Bill and I are ever blessed with grandkids.

Til then, this girl gets to play. banana

I'm going to go against the grain here.
A Henry strikes me as more of a family treasure than a 10/22.
It will look nice over your great-great-grandson's fireplace someday. I'd go so far as to suggest a 22mag for a little more versatility. Henry's have such a distinctive appearance, and you can get one that is custom engraved.

CZ makes a fine over and under in or near that price range. Now when it comes to the .22, I know everyone is going to say Ruger 10/22 and don't get me wrong they are great (I have one along with ALOT of the common .22s on the market) but I wouldn't get it to hand down as an heirloom... Here is the thing, A family heirloom is something special (my dad handed down his great grandpas .22 to me it is awesome) and all though the 10/22 is a cool and very well proven rifle lets face the facts, it is the number one selling .22 and in 100 years when years when you, I and your son will be dead and it will be going to your great great grandchildren the ruger 10/22 will stil be here, and most likely still be the number one .22 sold on the market. If I were you I would go to a few pawnshops and look for an old .22 bolt action or a pump action that has some character. You can get old 1900-1950 .22s far cheaper than you would think. I have seen a 1930-something Remington .22 in a pawn shop in really good condition for 100... That being said I now own it and it shots better than most .22s I own, not to mention it was made in a time when your dollar went more into building the rifle rather than building some greedy jerks mansion if you know what I mean.
