They aren't. The vibration from those things alone is enough to alert Helen Keller.

True enough. I've already wrecked my factory scope from the vibrations. With that being said, it is still an accurate and powerful air rifle for the money. I've killed possums and coons with mine.

I have a Beeman GS1000 and a RWS model 34. They make a very loud crack when shot. Those GAMO whispers aren't that quiet either.

I actually had a Gammo jar the scope loose and it hit me between the eyes?

I have a gamo with the silencer. It is one heck of a cat killer. The silencer, isn't. Still very loud.

It's actually quite hard to find something accurate quiet and inexpensive. The best way to get quiet is to lower the velocity. Since all the cheap air guns advertise their power, as that interests the first time buyer, they're all likely to be very loud. If you want a quiet high quality air rifle for neighbor friendly back yard plinking, try the Beeman R7 (scope) or Weihrauch 30S (irons).

I have wondered why airguns with silencers are supersonic.

Target models tend to be much quieter, but velocity tends to run 500-700 fps or so. CO2 and PCP guns eliminate the vibrations that "kill" scopes. AirForce has adjustable velocity and a suppressed model that isn't bad if you keep velocity under 1000, heavier pellets help here. Spring piston guns are loud, the newer gas or "nitro" power plants a little quieter. Pneumatic, or pump guns, tend to run quiet with the benefits of no scope damage, fixed barrel and cheap. Drawback is low power.
I like Colibri's and CB Longs myself.

My Crossman Fury is not that loud, but sort of. It is a lot of fun to shoot though. Sorry, but I am not smart enough to figure how it shoots fast and accurate repeatedly yet still costs only $100. Ignorance is bliss I guess...

Actually it's not hard at all. Benjamin Marauder does it with no problem.

The MOST quietest pellet gun is the one that got wrapped around a tree when I was a kid

The sound of the spring forcing the piston forward is still the same but the crack of the 1200 fps pellet exiting the barrel is what is reduced. I like mine. My scope has held up so far but I've probably only shot it a hundred times or so.

I've heard a number of good things about the Marauder. Perhaps I should have said that it's hard to find a quiet springer for reasonable money.

The marauder is nice, but it was out of my price range, so I went with this Crossman from Amazon. Under $150 for the .22.

http://www.amazon.com/Crosman-Nitro-Veno...an+nitro+piston

It has a nitrogen filled piston which is a bit quieter than a convetional spring, and it shoots subsonic which also helps limit the noise.

It's not silent, but I'd say the pellet's impact produces more noise (on certain targets) than the actual rifle.
