Got a Corsican back. Something inside rattles when I shake it and it smells like formaldehyde. Any suggestions to get the smell out? The taxidermist since retired. Just my luck. Stinks awful!!!!!!

Sounds like the horns were not treated properly, find another taxidermist to take a look at it. He should have glued the horns back on after cleaning out the inside but who knows what he really did besides him.

Uhhhh, thats bad. Not sure what would cause that unless it wasnt tanned properly or maybe he tried a green tan on the hide and it isnt cured. Maybe some of the Pros can chime in on this for ya.

I would at least set it outside on sunny nice days to air out some till you get someone to look at it.

I would suggest taking it to a taxidermist to look at it. There could be a number of reasons why it smells..... Horns or hide. Just depends on what it is if it can be fixed or not. Good luck. If you are in my area I would be more than happy to look at it for you.

True. Too bad you are so far away. No, my hubby does not. He actually got away from taking people out anymore. I am sorry.

Don't know if it will help but my guy told me to use febreeze on my proghorn as the scent glands on their cheeks stink for quite a while.

They only stink if your taxidermist did not flesh them out properly.....the two scent glands on a pronghorn's cheeks are beneath the skin...they must be split open and all that stinky goo removed....then the cape can be tanned properly. If this was not done, you will be smelling stinky antelope for years....as well as attracting bugs into your home.

My Corsican Ram mount has a bit of a stinch as well, nothing like your stating and you have to be close to it, but all others including a Blackbuck that was RANK at kill have no noticeable smell.

Like said above I would leave it in open air/sunshine to allow it to off gas.

Patience is the key

He may not have pulled the horns off the core and cleaned all the meat out. The rattling may be horns coming loose from the rotting meet, take the horn and try pooling on them and if the horn comes off or some stuff comes out that is what it is.
