I recently was given an older Winchester rifle that has been in the family a long time and would like to have a gunsmith check it out and make sure it's safe to shoot. Anybody know of a good one around DFW? Thanks!

I personally have used Doc's Gun shop in Carrollton, corner of Keller Springs and Broadway, 1 block east of 1-35E. Doc is a custom gun builder too but likes to work on older stuff too. 927-245-2955. Tell him Ron sent you. A shop I have not used but have not heard anything bad about would be Bill's Guns in south Arlington, next door to Alpine Gun Range. Talk to James Sheid, who ran Alpine for 20+ years. If you can find him in the Denton/Ponder area off of Hwy 380 west of I-35E, another good friend is Larry Pocrus. Operated Larry's Shooting Supply and Nix's repair shop in Lewisville for maybe 30+ years, closed the retail store earlier this year on Main Street in L'ville but is working on stuff at his home based shop now. Find Ken at the Academy store in Lewisville for contact info. Up here at Texoma I use Ray Zipper for all my stuff, another custom guy that has semi retired out of Dallas after owning a big gunsmith shop for 25+ years near Love Field but still works on stuff and tinkers with full buildups - PM me for contact info...Ray also has a 200 yard range I use behind his house. North of Pottsboro just off Hwy 120 on Ranger Road near the old fish hatchery and Game Wardens boathouse on the Little Mineral arm of Lake Texoma. All my other old buds have passed or retired. Ron

Thanks Ron--I think I'll start with Doc's and see what happens. I want to shoot it, but don't want it going up in my face!

Ron Coleman. (972)245-3030
He's one of those guys that you can just tell when you watch him work that he is a master (ignore the accolades plastered from one end of his shop to the other for everything from gunsmithing to his own shooting awards). If you want it done right, give him a call.
