There have been several posts in the past about the Rossi and the most recent one is still going on in this section.

Check out the post about Academy not taking returned guns.

The whole thing started over a Rossi .223...

Remington youth .243 with federal premium 85gr Tsx and there will be little to no recoil, scope with good eye relief, started my daughter at 7 with .223 and she weighs 52lbs and said the .243 is not that much different. I wish someone would have talked me into the .243 to begin with. I put zeiss conquest 3x9x40 on it got it on sale for about $350 from doug at cameralandny.com and it has been the perfect combo for my daughter. My .02 cents

The Rossi .223 is without a doubt the most popular youth gun that we sell. Just as an example, we have sold 8 in the past two days this week! One lady from San Saba, who owns several guns, bought three Rossi rifles yesterday for her grandkids!

The Rossi is a good starter gun for kids, and comes with a Simmons 3-9x40 scope with lens covers, and a Plano gun case.

The Remington .243 is also a youth model, but is much heavier than the Rossi and does not come with a scope; Howa also makes an excellent youth model and comes with a scope.

And... yes.... Academy does have a NO RETURN POLICY ON FIREARMS. That has NEVER been a secret, it is a disclaimer that is signed by the customer prior to completing the sale! However, that disclaimer also states that we will assist you if your gun needs to be sent for repair. Braztech, in Florida, is the distributor for Rossi and authorizes the repairs, if they are needed.

In the two and half years that our store has been open, we have had only two Rossi rifles brought in for repair; we have had 6 Remington rifles brought in for repair - 4 model 710's, and 2 model 770's. Of course, none of those guns were youth rifles, either.

I would suggest, as I always do, that you bring your kid in, and let him get a feel of what will work best for him. He may not like any of them!

Most of the package guns with scopes the scopes are junk, I dont hunt with junky equipment so why should my daughter, this is the way to go!

Give them the best you can afford, which increases the chances of a succesful hunt!

i've been pondering this issue for quite a while now......

my daughter is also 7 years old, and the other night i asked her if she was ready to go hunting this year... she said she didn't want to go this year :-( that kind of put my search for a youth rifle on hold, until she's ready or my son (5 years old) is ready......

what i'm looking at is this .243 by H&R (very last one on the bottom of the page) Superlight Handi-Rifle™ Compact http://www.hr1871.com/Firearms/Rifles/handiRifle.asp

it's shorter than any other youth model rifle out there, still kind of heavy, and single shot....

Bass Pro Shops is the only place in San Antonio that i could find it in stock, they have it for 269...

when i make a purchase for my kids, this is what i'll be getting them...

i thought about the rossi and other "2 in 1" guns, but figured i would just buy a youth model 410 or 20 guage when the time comes for that...

I bought and started my first son with a cut down Remington 788 in .243. Later traded for a Ruger M77 in 7 X 57. That is a very good round for kid or adult. My second son, I started in a Remington 700 ADL in .308. He was 10 and never shot anything with less recoil so he did not know the difference. Bought a full size stock when he was 14 and he still hunts with the same gun today.
