Im trying to get into bow hunting but the thing that stands in my way is the cost. I went to cinnamon Creek ranch today and the cheapest bow worth buying ( as the guy behind the counter told me) was the PSE stinger. He told me that out the door with everything i needed would be around $500. While i dont want to buy junk a $500 bow is out of my price range because i still need to get a tree stand and camo. If that truly is the cheapest way to get into bow hunting im going to have to sit this season and probably a few more out since im in college. If any one can help me out with a cheaper route i would greatly appreciate it because i really want to hunt this year.

I dont care if the bow is new or not i just want something that will shoot and i can rely on. Also if any one knows of cheap tree stand i could get that would be great. I was told that a tree stand will run me 100 or more. Any help is appreciated.

I think my best bet will be craigslist or a pawn shop as far as price goes but i don't know anything about bows. The guy at cinnamon creek told me that i shouldn't buy a used bow because you dont know how it was treated or if was dry fired.

I would advise you to watch the classifieds on texasbowhunter.com and make your same post there. There are lots of helpful people there and you can learn a lot reading posts there.

A Diamond Outlaw RAK package is $550 new and includes everything you need but arrows and a release and if you can find a used one it should be well under your limit and be a great starter bow.

Do you have any kind of budget?

And have you hunted before that you state you still need to get camo and a stand?

By the way, you can get a portable chair and hunt from the ground. Just buy a decent pair of brush clippers and make a ground blind.

Certainly you take some risk in buying a used bow, but ask the person to meet you at a reputable bow shop. Most shops will check it out for you knowing you're a future customer.

I think the biggest thing is making sure you're picking a bow that fits you, so you need to know your draw length.

Screw cammo....buy a 100.00 pop up ground blind, thus making camo nothing more than a fashion statement. Buy a decent bow, lesser accessories, buy a quality used bow.....etc

You can find a good used bow cheaper than a "low end" new bow. Just seen a Mathews Drenlin for $450, ready to go. What you need to do first, is find out what your draw length is. Then, if you find a bow in your price range but not in your draw length, find out if the bow can be put in your draw length. I know on some of the Mathews bows, the cams can be changed out to fit your draw length. Something to look into.
On tree stands, you were told wrong. I've bought aluminum lock-ons for under 70 bucks.
Check out sportsmanguide.com. You can get one of their brand of lock-on for under $40 or a combo of stand and climbing sticks for about $65. Or you can buy a ground blind for under $100.

you can find Hoyt in good condition in 250-400 range, depends on model.
Add release and arrows.
Check craigslist and ebay

I'm sure he'll be back. I'm looking at getting into bowhunting too, so this thread was interesting to me. I like the idea of getting a decent used bow for a relatively low price, but hadn't considered meeting at an archery shop so they could check out the limbs. Thanks for the idea!

Opinions are like [censored] everyone has one if a bow was not capable of killing it would not sell and i bet most of these bow hunters here could kill with the low end bows as well as there hi end counterpoints. What it boils down to is what feels good in your hands pick up a few bows feel them out and buy the one that feels right. If you practice enough you will be a perficiant killer with any weapon placed in your hands.

I will definitely be back! haha but right now i cant afford due to family issues but i will with out a doubt be bow hunting in a few years.

I have no idea,when i went into the shop i just wanted to look at prices to see if it was an option right now.

When you decide to do it and figure out your draw length you can look over on archery talk forums. They have a classifieds section strictly for bows. I got my son a fully rigged out Parker for $200 and it's a sweet shooter. You don't have to spend a ton of money to hunt with a bow. My first 50 or so animals I killed with an old PSE Nova that I paid $150 for brand new.

Look go get your draw length done and if it's right I have a bow I'll Let you have....it's older and only shoots 288 FPS, but it has killed more deer than both my newer bows combined!! You'll need more arrows if I can't find the ones I was shooting with it but other than that it is ready to go. We'll have to figure out how to get it to you as well. I'm on a fixed income, so cannot afford to ship it!!

Find a good used one. Just be careful you don't get a junked out bow. Cracked limbs or bent cams will cost you or put you in the hospital.
