I will be picking my GSP up from the trainer at the end of this month and would like to get him on some birds before the season starts
I am mainly a dove hunter but do hunt quail from time to time I was wondering if anyone near Brenham knows where to find pen raised quail this time of year?
i have approx. 100 acres with a 25 acre hay pasture that i am wanting to use to plant some birds in and test out my pup BUT i have no idea how i would plant the birds and if there is a certain way to do that is better than others if anyone is interested i would love to have a few guys come out and show me the ropes and of course test out my pup and harvest some quail
let me know if anyone has any interest in this i would of course purchase the birds just bring your knowledge and gun

Not sure where you could find birds right now, none of the ones I know will have any until September. Do what you want but just FYI, you cant legally shoot pen raised birds out of season unless you have paid the $80 to TP&W for the private bird hunting area permit & all birds have to be banded, aside from what you might be told on here, this isn't a county by county thing, it is a statewide law.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

You could use pigeons. Just dizzy them first, they're legal to shoot year round.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

What did the trainer do with the dog? That makes a difference in how well the birds need to be planted.
I lot of people in the area get their birds from the road side quail from in Columbus.
As far as planting, I have only worked with quail but I have found using a glove works best to make sure you come at a different angle then how the dog will work the field. Otherwise the dog will learn very quickly how to track you. I take a quail in my hand and make a circle for about ten to fifteen seconds. You should see the head going round and round. Immediately plant the bird in grass but place it gently and keep an eye on it. The bird should not be extremely dizzy otherwise it will not likely fly off. Slowly walk away and keep an eye on it as best you can.
Some people have written about dizzying the birds for longer or by taking them and slamming them to the ground hoping that they stay. I have found that they are either too dizzy and wont fly or they will immediately fly off once they hit the ground with the second method.
I'll take a Black Female every time.

Get a foot bird launcher they work good while training and you will know exactly where the bird is
