Has anyone made leather rifle slings? I want to build a simple leather sling like the ones that use to come with Remington rifles. I just want a fun project for my sons and me to do this summer.

Leather work is fun, but some of the tools can get pricey on the initial investment.

However, you can rifle slings for your whole family, and enjoy the time with the kids.

I use a wooden top work bench for my leather work, and I use a 4' metal ruler and a sharp utility knife to make square edges.

Now, cutting a strap or two parallel edges in leather might sound simple, but once you try it. You'll buy one of these...

You can buy special tools to round over leather corners, and they work exceptionally well(make for cleaner work). But..you can just trace edges, and cut with the utility knife

The kids will love stamps

Fiebings makes great leather dye. Apply to dry leather, not wet. If you apply it to wet leather, it always seams to rub off forever.

If you want to add snaps, you will need specail snap setting punch kit.

Paints and small brushes can be used to pop out letters or whatever

I forgot to mention, hole punches are worth the investment. Don't buy the multipurpose ones. Get the single size punches you hit with a mallet. They work the best. And Chicago screws are great in places you want to secure, but remove later. Snaps are ideal in areas where you want to open/close regularly, and stitching is best for permanent

Are you ordering from the mail, or are you going to a local store? I generally use around 8 oz stuff ( 1/8")

I use a De Walt cordless drill to drill all my stitching holes.

I also use a drill when I use lacing. I don't do much stitching because I have hand tremors and some hand pain that really restricts me on those types of projects.
