As stated by many others, they tend to be overpriced but occasionally there are bargains to be found. Maybe they are going to improve, we can hope.

I as well. I have only browsed at Gander Mountain a few times, so I am not all that familiar with them. The Academy in Lewisville is literally across the street, so we shall see how that goes. And yes, they are opening in the spot the OP mentioned. A friend I go to church with applied there.

More importantly, we are also getting a Taco Casa and Dairy Queen...

Same in Amarillo. High prices, poor selection and Wal-Mart caliber employees. Very poor knowledge of guns/ammo. Was there at Christmas time just browsing the gun counter while a gentleman was checking out with a Taurus Judge. It was a 2 1/2" chamber and the clerk had picked out 3" 410 shells and 45 ACP. I apologized for butting in but told him neither would work in the gun knowing the no return policy on ammo. The clerk and even his boss told the guy 45 ACP and 45LC are interchangeable. The guy left and I saw him later at Academy. At least they are slightly more knowledgeable.

Gander Mountain used to be one of THE places, along with Herter's, if you wanted the different item that nobody had they were the 2 places to go to. This was long before Cabela's became the Walmart of sporting goods. Too bad Herter's has gone the way of the dodo bird and Gander Mountain is still operating with a business model in the 1960's.

AGREED, at least we are getting a Cabelas just down the street. Maybe there prices will have to go down to compete.

Case in point: Went to Gander here yesterday to buy some tennis shoe sandals (or whatever they are).

Kid helping was indifferent, lazy, and borderline rude. I left.

I know people say complain to managers, call corporate, blah, blah, blah. Guess what? I ain't got time for all that crap.

I just vote with my money. I have quit on several local establishments after repeated bad experiences and from time to time their owners ask me where I've been and I tell them the same thing.

I go to the one in Tyler infrequently. They are much higher than Academy which is (for all intents and purposes)their neighbor. I only go when I am looking for something a little more specialized that they don't have at Academy which is rare.

The GM in Wichita, KS, however, is on a whole other level. They have an indoor gun range for live ammo, an automated shooting scenario range and team shooting competitions. Wish we could get that caliber here.

They must be taking over much of the old S.W. locations... which is smart, it'll save them money. They're moving in to the one in Round Rock. Prices or not, I'm looking forward to being able to get things that Academy does not have with only a short drive from the house. Cabela's isn't that far away, but it's still a haul to get down there sometimes.

Now if you guys want some "high" prices try Cabelas. They also have some 3rd rate products under their roof as well as some quality products. Their help expertise is spotty. Gander mountain in Corsicana is one of the best that I've been in. However since my son has relocated to Ky will not be getting down there any more.

I'll say it once again, gander mountain price matches. And if you were to check out with me, I'd price match it even if academy didn't have it in stock. And they also offer an extended warranty which betters the manufactures for $30.

Y'all can complain all you want, but at least a lot of y'all have choices. Locally we have the local shops and an Academy. I prefer to shop the local shops when I can, it keeps a small business person in business, and the people know what they are selling. up

And something else for y'all to think about before y'all hate on outdoor store employees. Say you get a job being the gun counter, do you know everything about aBrowning cynergy, or a citori, what about a Benelli m2, our a walther pps, or Remington 1911, or a tikka t3. Can you tell me every little detail about each gun. I doubt it, and those people help the best they can, and if we don't know we try to find someone who does. And yes sometimes those stores hire bad apples, and I've seen personally how hard it is to fire someone. They are no different than you or me, so think about that next time you go on there and they don't know everything.

KWood I'm sure you are a good employee but some are simply not. Mostly young but even some older. And I'm not talking about not knowing how to break down a Tikka-I'm talking about knowing the magazine from the muzzle.

P.S. Extended warranties on consumer goods are the biggest customer ripoff in retail.

Not at gander mountain. If anything is to happen to the gun, and you have the protection plan, it covers shipping costs, and ffl fees. And I know about bad employees, the ones that work behind the gun counter at academy in amarillo are dumber than a box of rocks, combined. We had one ourselves, terrible employee, but they couldnt fire him. And yes, the store manager is an idiot at the gander in amarillo. And also, sometimes someone has to do a double check that isn't firearms related, so even though they are our manager, they don't know guns, they just know what to look on the 4473 to make sure its right.

You shouldn't be getting upset Kwood. People are just sharing their experiences. Perception is reality and the reality is that Gander has a bad reputation and has itself to blame for that. I'm sure you're a great employee and I'm sure there's plenty more like you but the fact of the matter is if customers think otherwise about service and prices then GM is obviously doing something wrong.

I can confirm they are opening at the old Sportsman's Warehouse in San Antonio at 151/410. They have a big sign out saying they are now hiring.

Maybe GM will open one up between Ft Worth & Weatherford. Then there'll be someplace else I probably won't visit more than once a year....(just to see if they're still there)

I go to the local GM and look around. If I find something significiant then I call Academy for price and availability. GM just does not seem "customer friendly".

Called the GM in Corsicana about hunter safety class they are doing. Kid on the phone is clueless and says so. Then when I asked about any thing I need to do before the class for me and two 9 yr old boys, he informs me that I have to come in two days before and register and pay. Well, that store is overran hour away and when I explained that fact and then offered to mail check and other info he said that would not work..... "Why the heck not??? " response was " We've never done that before."
Really thinking if going somewhere else just because of the tone and lack of a G.A.S attitude from this "customer service rep...
