I need/want a camera to take hunting. I want to spend under $300 or so. It will be used to take pictures of game &etc. I do not want something very small. It's easier to hold something a little heavier still. I want one with as as high a zoom as possible. As you can see I'm not a camera 'nut.' So, let's keep it as simple as possible. I don't need the best possible pictures, just decent ones. A friend has a video cam that takes pretty good 'snap shots.' I don't even know if i want a slr or a video camera. What would you suggest? thanks. capt david

Capt, first how far are your feeders...you do have feeders? Or food source if you don't have feeders? The further away the more zoom you'll need, the more zoom the more stability you'll need. I have a pretty nice Canon with a zoom lens and with feeders over a 100 yards it was very difficult to get quality photos until I understood how to utilize the camera correctly and then I also brought in my tripod in order to steady up so the photo would be good.

This is from about 140 yards:

Here is a little more zoom:

Hope this helps...

I checked around on the Nikon and Canon web sites and for your stated price range the only camera with a decent zoom is going to be the Canon PowerShot SX500. It has a 30x zoom. But bear in mind this the bottom of Canon's telezoom family. The Canon PowerShot SX50 is $450 but has a 50x zoom lens. The Nikon Coolpix 510 with a 42X zoom lens is $380.00 and the Coolpix 520 which also has a 42x lens is $450. Sony also has an offering, the HX300 with a 50x zoom that sells for $500. There are other cameras like the Pentax X-5 which sells for $230 with a 26x lens as well as the Sony H200 that sells for $230 with a 26x but the quality is not near as good as one of the Canon or Nikon products.

Those are the kind of pictures that I'm looking to take. I hunt various places, so the higher zoom the better. I do realize that can cause a problem, which is why I don't want a 'small' camera. What make/model/price were those pictures taken with. FWIW id will be using a tripod when applicable. capt david

Texan, as I said, Im not much of a photographer, and wonder if I'd ever appreciate the difference. I was looking at this Canon PowerShot SX500 IS 16.0 MP Digital Camera (Black) + NB-6L Battery + 8pc Bundle 16GB Accessory Kit from ebay

You want optical zoom rather than digital zoom. I actually take most of my photos from the blind with my iphone while holding it up to my nice binoculars. It's a ghetto rig for sure, but works well!

I would get online and look at feedback on cameras based on what you are wanting to do on several sites like Beach Camera or B&H Photo and Video. Then go to a local camera store where you can put your hands on the camera and see if you like it. I would take higher MP on the camera vs. higher zoom. You can crop it on your computer to your liking. You could also look into a used DSLR camera with a better lens that is used for your budget also.

For handheld shots using max telephoto zoom, you'll want a camera with image stabilization.

I had a Canon SX500IS and it's a pretty decent camera for the price. It has 30x optical zoom, which is equivalent to 1200mm focal length.

The SX50HS has 50x optical zoom. For all out reach, this is the camera you want. It's a bit above your $300 cap though and comes in at $430.00.

Either will work well for you.

No where close to what you want to spend but this was taken this morning with a Nikon L26.

My old P80 Nikon Cool Pic or something in that range is a good starter camera for those wanting something a little more, nice zoom, image stabilizer and auto features, my D90 is probably a little more than you want to spend but it's a great camera.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Here is the same pic before cropping and after. Deer is about 180 yards away. This pic was taken with a 10mp camera and a 100-400mm IS zoom lens at 400mm with fading light.
First pic.

This is after cropping.

With a high MP camera, the image stabilizing feature and using a tripod you can take a pic under the right condition to later crop it.

Just went and looked at the Canon PowerShot SX500. I like the size of the camera. My only concern was it only has the LCD screen for taking pictures. Little concerned that on a blue bird day, seeing what I'm taking a picture of may be an issue.

No Nikon Coolpix 510 to check out, but the 520 was there. Another nice camera and it has the traditional eye viewer. However, at its price point, I almost do better to jump over to a SLR digital camera Nikon D3100 on sale for about the same price $449.00
