Other vs thread got me thinking. AK vs AR? You have a semi realistic bug-out scenario where you have to go a couple weeks or a month into the sandbox / wilderness with them and see how they fare once they have been through a few hundred rounds with no where to clean except the area around you, which is covered sand, dirt and mud because sand / dirt / mud gets everywhere, no matter what you do to try to avoid it and that's if you have cleaning stuff, say you don't. Which would you pick if you had to go into this with an option? Has to be AR or AK, no .22 or shoty keep it fun. I'll take my AKM over an AR all around. I bet I can predict what most realistic guys would pick too. Thanks

Yeah AK for durability, and chances are we will whack more of them, so there will be more 7.62 laying around than 5.56...
That is of course unless the them is US and the us is you and me...don't want to think about that scenario too long, it may get me in trouble with the IRS

AR for me. I've never even held an AK before so I really can't compare the two. However I know when I go hunting I strap my AR to the front of the four wheeler and it gets plenty of mud and dirt in it. I've never had a problem with it firing afterward. I only clean my guns when accuracy starts to slip. I've never had a problem with my AR's not firing so I'd trust my life to an "unclean" AR in the field for 30 days.

I don't have an AK so I would grab my Colt AR and not fill the least bit uneasy about it. But I would probably not bug out in the first place.

AR. The Daniel Defense torture test video is awfully convincing of their durability. I've never cared for AK's.

I have 2 separate load outs for such scenarios, one being an AR and the other an AK. both have the same amount of mags/ammo. it would really depend on the scenario to determine which one I grab...

In reality I would likely take a few of each in my BOV. But my SBR Yugo M92 is silly small folded, and I only lose 100ish FPS with my 10.5 inch barrel. IT will be with me for sure.

I don't have an AK so I would grab my Colt AR and not fill the least bit uneasy about it. But I would probably not bug out in the first place. You have the high ground, I'd stay put too! I'd grab an AR without hesitation. I think the whole AR vs AK reliability thing is blown way out of proportion. I've seen AR's continue to function after getting pretty dang filthy. The weight difference and increased accuracy makes up for any perceived shortcomings.

The video of some dudes shooting an AR non-stop until the polymer hand guards caught fire, then put it out by throwing the gun in a mud puddle, then continuing to shoot it was pretty telling on reliability issues and ARs...

The AK is just a down-n-dirty, nitty gritty kind of weapon that loves to be abused and ran hard. The AR is the more refined, cultured weapon that is a bit more friendly regarding the ergonomics. ARs can be very robust too! But, right now, I am dreaming of an AK54r, that shoots 54r in an AK form. Along with about 1,000 sealed spam cans of ammo!

I would choose my BCM 14.5 with pinned compensator for OAL of 16".

If I had any guns I'd probably grab an AR.

since i don't own an ar. . . . . . .
i wouldn't want to running exposed on the streets or in the open with a visible long gun or any visible firearm. if i were a soldier or guardsman or law officer and since there would likely be martial law in effect i would be shooting any armed persons i saw running around openly armed. you won't win a firefight either way. you will die.

I'll take my Daniel Defense AR. Its one of the most dependable weapons I've ever owned.... well other than my glocks.
