Well...if this is the newbie thread ill give a little introduction. My name is Sam. I go to Texas A&M and a cousin in law from there got me hooked on waterfowling. Never did much of it (my family has always been deer hunters) but I did hunt a couple of times in the flooded timbers in Arkansas with my dad and some clients. Anyway, my family has an awesome private game ranch out in Young Co. Brazos River runs through it and it is surrounded by winter wheat fields, so I decided to get some family members and try doing a little duck hunting on our front pond. Well we shot a five man limit in about 10 minutes consisting of ringnecks, teal, gadwall, wigeon, hollywood shovelers, pintail and mallards. Now I duck hunt all winter break up there once ive bagged my buck for the season (its a one buck county). What sucks is the distance from BCS to Young county. I drive up there when I can but do not get up there very often during the school year.

During the school year I can be found duck hunting in the North Zulch area and the Waller area because they are closer to Bryan.

I am from the Fort Worth area so if any of you guys have spots out around Graham my family's place is northwest of there a little ways. We shoot mainly ducks and sandhills (we have tons of sandhill cranes) and I from time to time need a huntin buddy. If any of you guys live around Fort Worth and can split gas, I would be glad to take someone along with me for a hunt, especially once December rolls around.

Duck hunting has become quite popular in our family ever since we discovered we could kill them on our property. The area we hunt holds quite a variety of ducks, so you never know what you are gonna bag.

Needless to say I am pumped for the opener, and I hope everyone on here has a safe and successful hunting season.

How many boxes do I need? We can stop in Arlington and pick up Ivan (killinboob ) on the way also.

Another one for the newbie-forum.

So, camo hat in-hand...my Name is Phillip, I'm 33 and I live in the DFW area. I'm fairly new to hunting and last season was my first year to get out. A friend from work took me to a lake nearby a couple of times. I got hooked, and now that I find myself with a fairly flexible schedule on the weekends, and during the week, I'm trying to learn what I can, and find out some information about how all of this is done. I'm looking forward to the season start this year for sure (missed it last year).

I've spoken with the TPWD, and the COE, as well as a County Water district here and there to find out where I can legally go. I've been reading/looking at some additional info about duck hunting in general, and how to get started, as this is new to me.

Would appreciate a PM with any books, or information sources, if you are so inclined.

Thank you all, and I look forward to being part of the forum.

Welcome to the forum, glad to have you

Lots of information out there, but grab a copy of Texas Waterfowl by Chester Moore, it's a Texas Fish & Game Publishing Co. book. Some really good info.

Well this is the help the newbie thread, so I am posting it publicly. A great book for the new TX duck hunter. Realize much of the information is outdated and you would need to contact associated controlling authorities before hunting, but pick you up a copy of:

Texas Waterfowl by Chester Moore.

Sounds like your on the right track.

Most of what is in that book anyone could find on the internet and experienced duck hunters will already know about more of what is in their area than this book presents, but it is nice to have all of it in hand.

Same would apply to this next book if you are of the type that travels around to hunt Texas WMAs. I have hunted more of them than I can count on two hands, and most information can be found on the internet or by making phone calls, but again it is handy to have in hand for reference.

Official Guide to Texas Wildlife Management Areas
By Larry D. Hodge

I feel books like this can be very helpful to the hunter new to an area who does not know where to start looking. Take my recent Colorado trip. I had about 5 books in the cab of my truck with me. Titles like Colorado Guide to Hunting, Colorado State Wildlife Areas, Colorado Fishing, Hunting, and Outdoor Guide. I referenced them often while on the road considering my next destinations.
