I was wondering for those who use them what you use to bait them with. I bought 8 of them and used marshmallows and caught one. I know I have a family of 8-9 coons that has been eating my protein pretty hard. I am not sure how far a part you should put one trap from another trap. I have a pretty good sense of what direction they come from. Just hoping to get some ideas or advice.
Thank Steve

I used them around my feeders and tried marshmallows and they worked ok. Then I just put some corn out of my feeder in them and did a lot better

We use Sardines in our live traps at work.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

I use corn in mine with a small piece of sardine or liquid off it in one. I have also used a cotton ball with some of the liquid fish attractant dropped on it. I have fire ants to deal with so I need something that will last a while. Tie them securely as I have had 3 coons untie them and get away with them in the last year. I double tie mine with wire now.

If you have any leftovers that havent been eaten in a few days, use that. Otherwise, we use sardines. Been working pretty good for us.

Anykind of stinky fish or shellfish. Shrimp shells worked on the last one I caught.

I use the floating fish food pellets I throw in the pond to feed my fish, very high catch rate. One of the coons I caught last time out had both front feet in the trap.
My wife must be a cross between a Indian and a bulldog. When she's not on the warpath, she's sitting on her butt growling.

We like the DP traps for the coons that will not go into the regular live traps. Use corn or protein, that is why they are at the feeders in the first place. And it's a heck of a lot cheaper than the attractants. Unless you have them high maintenance coons.

Thanks for all of the info...How close would you put one trap next to another? I have put them to close and had a coon catch himself in two of them. So I know try to keep them about 4' apart or so.

I agree, double wire them when you tie them down and twist them up good. We lost a few traps to some coons. We later caught a three legged one in a live trap, that sucked.

I use marshmallows then put about 1/4 of the cheapest canned cat food that is a fish flavor ontop. I put them by trails that lead to the feeder at least 40 yards apart. I do not put them right by the feeder because they go nuts and spook game at the feeder.
Be sure to wire them good to a tree or they will take off with them!

have caught over 200 in the last 2 years using jack mackerel and peanut butter, take a nearly empty jar of peanut butter and mix in a can of jack mackerel, now you have a screw on lid for the jack mack, a teaspoonful in each dp is all it takes, I leave the jar in the back of the truck for weeks at a time and it doesn't spoil, jack mack is much cheaper than sardines and the can is much larger - easy to catch over 30 coons with one can mixed in with a few tablespoons of peanut butter - hope this helps, I use snare extension cables on the dps, work much better than wire, can buy them at any trappers supply - MTP,FNT

I have been using grizz getters and had about a 50% catch rate each night with only 4 traps out we have been putting them about 3-4 ft off trails and use cattle feed spread across the trail to the grizz getter then some inside!

When using fish and fish by-products in your traps, will the wife still let me keep them in the garage after I am done, or will they have a pretty good smell to them and I will need to find another place to keep them?

Just power wash them off or boil them in hot water before you put them up. I leave mine out year round so I continually catch new trespassers. I am up to 64 since I started last July.

Or are you worried she might think your fooling around When using fish and fish by-products in your traps, will the wife still let me keep them in the garage after I am done, or will they have a pretty good smell to them and I will need to find another place to keep them?
