Does this look like mange? If so, what can I do to keep from getting it before I take the dog to the vet?

Hard to tell but it's crusty around a maybe half inch gash.

Doesn't look like mange to me; but the old timers used to say the only way to treat mange was to rub some used motor oil on it.

Personally I would just take it to the vet.

There are a couple different types of mange, demodectic and sarcoptic, the first is not contagious but the second is.The mange is usually pretty easy to spot as it is almost always most prevalent on either the face or feet first. You can treat the mange with Ivermectin which you can get at tractor supply or most feed stores, but unless you know what you are doing see a vet first because it doesn't take much to overdose a dog and kill it. All of that being said, this appears to be Ringworm which is much easier to treat. Either way I would get it to the vet.

not sure what part of the dog that is from the picture, but if it's in an area that it can't lick... you might want to try a little Lotrimin on it and see if it clears up. I agree it looks like ringworm.

Shave the hair around it to give it a chance to dry out. It does not look like mange. I don't know if it is a ringworm.

Does not look like mange to me either. but first step for me would be to put a cone on his head keep him from licking it lots of stuff can be spread to other parts of the dogs body by licking.

Do not think it is mange but not sure it is a ring worn either. I had a young hound that had a similar looking spot show up over his shoulders a couple of months ago. I treated it with an antibiotic dressing and it cleared up in a week or so.
The best treatment for mange that I have found is to mix powered sulfur with bacon grease. It will cure mange when nothing else will and it is priced right.
Adios,
Gary

My buddies dog Max (who just passed away 2 weeks ago) would get hot spots that would start out all red & have a bunch of puss. Looked real similar to that. He would get them if he didn't get an allergy shot about every 6 months. Hard to tell by the picture though. I don't think it's mange. Oh and the first time Max got one of those spots, I thought it was ringworm & took him to the vet (my buddy was out of town) it was a hot spot.

I am guessing they caught it early? A lot of people let go on untreated and that's when things get rough. Keep us posted on the progress.
