It was a bull snake which is nice to have around since they eat rattlesnakes, but now it's a dead snake. The rattlers will be by shortly to thank you.

Well now I know what a bull snake looks like and does! Yesterday when it was close to my 4 year old daughter to me it was a " bad snake". Thank you for educating me on snakes. And too bad I didn't know what kind of snake it was I wouldn't of killed it, now I feel kind of bad

I can understand how people feel about killing venomous snakes around the house, barn, etc...but if they are away from people, let them alone unless you prefer rats and mice in all you stuff! JMO

Bull snakes have been known to kill a rattlesnake, but rattlers are not their primary diet. It was a good snake, but I would bet most folks on this forum would have done the same as you...especially if they couldn't identify the snake. I am all for leaving snakes and I even relocate rattlers out of our camp without killing them, but I sure don't blame one of the other guys for killing them.

Thanks txshntr am sure im not the only one who has done something like this. Ignorance yes, thats one of the reason i did it, but the main reason is that it was close to my daughter and my natural sense of protection took over me and if your a dad you know what i mean. We hadn't seen any snakes at our place in about 4 or 5 years, the landowner let some guy catch them and he got about 200+ snakes, so i didn't really worry about snakes till now.

I turned it loose on his place. He was pretty happy about it.

Would anyone have any suggestions for me to deter rattle snakes from around our home. We live in Weatherford, and have 3 rattlesnakes in the back yard and one sounds like it made it to under our front porch, deck. Anything I can put out that is natural and will chase them away? All suggestions greatly appreciated. I would rather have them go away than have them destroyed.
