If you had your choice and everything was apple to apples on a jeep would you pick 4cyl fuel injected or v6 carb?
God is deep but he is not complicated.

Id pick the jeep with fuel injection Inline 6 Being serious, Id pick the 6cyl. Or hold off until you found one that was fuel injected 6cyl.

I have a 4 cyl. It'll do 70mph no problem, if your goin' downhill and the wind is at your back and it's empty. Absolutely useless on the hwy. You'll just be in the way. I'm thinking about doin' a 350 conversion.

6cyl fuel injected, have one and wish I had a 350. That's just the way it works. I would never own the 4cyl.

My wife had the straight six in her '02 and loved it. She has the V6 in her '11, it sucks with 35s. Gonna swap it for a 6.1L when the warranty is up.

Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

The 4 banger is great, as long as the floorboards are shot, and you have Fred and Wilma Flintstone as passengers.
Go with the 6.

I have a 97 Sahara inline 6 that does pretty good. It pulls my 33'' tires pretty well and can pull a utility trailer with ATV just fine. My Dad has a 95 4 cylinder that he got a deal on, and its ok for a beat around farm vehicle, but wouldnt drive it very far on highway. It struggles with 31's.

Had a buddy that put a 350 in a jeep and first time he got in it, he shelled the standard transmission. I told him I didn't think the jeep trans would hold up to a 350. He put a chevy trans in it and all was good. My advice is buy a short wheel base 4x4 pickup. Jeeps are money pits of the highest order.

I have a 2002 with the injected 6 cyl and I have a 1985 with a carb 6 cyl. My buddy has a 1995 with the injected 4 cyl. The 4 cyl goes everywhere i can go in the dirt and mud. However, it is worthless on the road.
So if its going to be used on the dirt most of the time the 4 cyl is okay.
But its hard to pass up a 6 cyl. Besides, you can put an aftermarket injection kit on the 6 cyl.

I put a 350 in a CJ and had no problems with the T176 tranny or Dana 300 tcase. And know of plenty others that have had success. Now my cousin tried it in his 4 cylinder YJ and had all kinds of problems. Im assuming its because the tranny was only engineered for the 4 cylinder. Just a guess. Also I have the factory 6 in a cherokee and cannot explain how pleased I was with it. Put 187,000 miles on it before retiring it as a ranch ride.

If the indended use is to ever go over 60 mph get the 6. I passed up a lot of good deals for 3 years because I was waiting on a I6 and I finally got it. My buddy has a 4banger and he litterally has to get a head of steam going to go around a truck in the interstate. When he gets to the front of the semi the 4 banger won't push through the air wave.

If you plan to drive it on public roads, get the I6. Older jeeps had carbs, but those can be converted to fuel injection.
If you are planning to use it exclusively off-road, where you won't be in traffic, the 4 cyl would probably be fine.

He had an LS 6.0 motor w/4L80 Trans. laying around waiting for the right project, and decided he'd stuff it in the Jeep. After a couple of months, and a couple thou more spent than he'd planned, it lived. After a trip around the block, he romped on it. It immediately spit out the rear driveshaft. A couple days later, running once more, he locks in the front axle, hit the dirt, romps it again, and shelled the front differential along with the rear driveshaft. A couple weeks later, running once more, he bound it up in some rocks, poured the coal to it, and shelled the freshly built front differential once again. He's working on a full width 14bolt FF and Dana 60 axle swap now. It ought to be a monster if he can ever get driveline parts to stay together.

I have a 4, with 33 inch tires and it'll go anywhere. of course anyone would like more power no matter what they have, but the 4 is quite it'll go 75 mph and it is tuff as nails. Do whatever you can afford. I've had my 4 for about 8 years and never had a breakdown.

And I, for one, do not wish for any more power in my vehicle. When I set out for a huntin' wagon, I decided upon 381 horsepower. No more. No less. And by God, that's what I found.
