I prefer a lighter trigger pull than the usual block and tackle setting from the factory. I'm thinking 2.5 lb is a good weight but still heavy enough for safety. Any opinions on this?
Thanks.

2.5 lbs is a good weight for hunting. Check the rifle several times while empty/unloaded by both slamming the bolt closed and dropping the stock on the floor. Better safe than sorry!

I wouldnt use a factory trigger set at 2.5lbs, I would only use a trigger specificaly designed for pull weights under 3lbs...
Factory triggers set below 3#'s are dangerous because they aren't designed to be set that low.
Any trigger I have set below 3.5lbs is a jewell or timney
Hence the reason remington went to xmark to keep people from messing them up

what rifle and what trigger (stock or aftermarket)? not much difference between 2.5 and 3lb triggers, they never break exactly at advertised weight

If you use a grip exerciser and proper trigger pull, you'll find a few pounds makes absolutely no difference in practical hunting accuracy. That means no difference between three and six pounds.

I too prefer a lighter trigger. I put a Jewel in my Rem 700 and set it at 1.5 lbs.
It is very light. Some would say too light. But the trigger is designed for bench rest shooting and can be set as low as a few ounces.
I don't touch it until my scope is solidly on target.
It helped my 700 go from 3" groups with the 8# trigger to sub moa.

2.5 to 3.5 lbs and refer consistent 3 lbs that breaks consistently a 3lbs.

To me it's more important that the trigger be smooth with a crisp break. I've shot a lot of DA revolver so I don't notice weight as much as I notice creep.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Also it seems to me that colder weather affects pull. might be just me. Much prefer installing an aftermarket trigger designed for the job not a polished and springs cut in the case of AR's. Just ordered another Timney for my new Sig in .308 Kinda partial to their products

A 4# trigger with a crisp break will feel lighter/better than a 2.5# that is gritty but I digress..
The majority of my sporter rigs are set ~2.5 lbs. and my bench guns are much lower. No issue with a properly set 2.5 lb trigger for hunting.

My 300 Magnum is a Browning Medallion. I'm assuming I can get good aftermarket triggers for this? I do agree that a crisp trigger would probably take some of the perceived need for a lighter pull out of the equation. And thanks for the good answers. This forum is extremely helpful.

I like light but not too light. My hunting rifles are set around 3 lbs. my uncle has a .270 that is set at 1lb and its way too light for my taste.
I've shot a bench rest gun that had a 6 oz. trigger on it, that was an experience
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

It all depends on the situation for me. If I am going after smaller targets say prairie dogs or cotton tails at long range the lighter the better. I guess that's why I prefer a set trigger. Best of both worlds. Light when ya have time and are properly set up or a good clean and crisp 3# when maybe you have a running shot. The set trigger on mine is at 12 oz

In my opinion....an ideal hunting trigger is somewhere around 2.5 lbs. I have rifles everywhere from 1.25 lbs to 5 lbs....but most are in the 2-3 lb range.
I also have a CZ .375 H&H with a single-set trigger, with normal pull around 3 lbs....but when the trigger is "set" it is roughly 10 oz.

most of my hunters are 2 to 2.5 lb pull and my 308 im building for target fun is 20 ounces. I think the 2-2.5 range is perfect hunting rifle setting.

The last A-bolt I did a trigger job on was a few years ago, but I would imagine that the new ones are the same. That particular gun had a small chrome plated piece on top of the trigger to give a nice smooth pull. Pretty smart way to do it actually. Unfortunately the only adjustment allowed on that model was the weight of pull which just controlled how much you were loading up the trigger spring at the rear of the trigger. I ended up swapping it out with a Moyers unit which is fully adjustable for weight of pull down to a lower weight, sear engagement, and overtravel. It's performed flawlessly on that rifle for 10 years and counting.
There are other triggers available for the A-Bolts now, as well as just a simple spring replacement, so you have other options but the Moyers is a good unit.

Good deal. Did you have to shorten the spring?

I honestly think that 4# to 4.5# is perfect for a hunting rifle.
If you're shooting off of sticks or from an unsupported seated position (you can't always get prone and you're not always going to have a blind with a nice rest) I think a light trigger can make you very prone to flyers when it really counts. There are times when that extra two pounds helps - it shows that you REALLY mean it...

All of my rifles have 2 1/2 pound triggers. Keep your booger hook off the bang button until you're ready for the bang.

All of my rifles have 2 1/2 pound triggers. Keep your booger hook off the bang button until you're ready for the bang. For sure, that's your ultimate safety - but would you consider that flyers happen before or after you're "ready enough" to put your booger hook on the bang button? Just my opinion, but I like a little more pull when conditions are less than ideal and my veins are full of adrenaline.
