With nothing for you to do this spring but argue with other THF members, I thought you might like to see some photos of our recently-completed spring bear hunt to Alaska's Prince of Wales Island. We hunted with outfitters and good friends, Kurt and Trina Whitehead of Alaska Glacier Adventures. We 4 east Texans all scored on big bears, although one of us was picky and waited till the last day to pull the trigger. In addition to bear hunting, the fishing was fabulous anywhere you dropped your line, and we ran crab pots daily. We also dug for clams and caught thousands of shrimp. Eagles were everywhere, as were seals, otters, and sitka blacktail deer. We saw whales most days and even cruised for around a half-hour with a pod of orcas. Robert took the biggest bear. It will make B&C all-time, squaring 7'3" and the skull measured 21 4/16": Ken's bear was taken the second day and squared 6'10" with a skull of nearly 20". It has a perfect coat, the best fur on the trip: Jeff just wanted a bear, any bear. His was just under 6', with a 17" skull. He took it the 3rd day. It is an average boar for POW Island: http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p186/dawaba/th_IMG_0276_zpsc9fb82c3.jpgDave took his bear on the last day, day 8, a 7'1" boar scoring 20 8/16". It will make B&C Awards, falling just short of the all-time book: http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p186/dawaba/POW%2009/IMG_0407_zpsa8fdc0a3.jpgThe first 3 bears and hunters on the Glacier: http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p186/dawaba/POW%2009/IMG_0321_zpsf907f52c.jpgCatching kings with Trina: http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p186/dawaba/POW%2009/POW2012041_zpsd24df1a9.jpgWatching a (too small) bear: http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p186/dawaba/POW%2009/IMGP0808.jpgA big sow: http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p186/dawaba/POW%2009/IMGP0802.jpgA young boar at 17 yds: http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p186/dawaba/POW%2009/IMGP0763.jpgDungeness crabs, the best-eating seafood anywhere! http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p186/dawaba/POW%2009/IMGP0724.jpgOrcas. This pod had maybe a dozen individuals, including 2 bulls. Their size makes you feel insignificant: http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p186/dawaba/POW%2009/IMGP0712.jpgThe native Haida people all have totem poles in their front yards: http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p186/dawaba/POW%2009/IMGP0619.jpgA bear in your lap. Talk about a pucker! http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p186/dawaba/POW%2009/IMGP0769_zpsee7aaed7.jpg We loved the trip. Hope you like the photos.

Well done. I was there last year. Which side of the island were you hunting?

SW side, around Hydaburg mostly. Dall Island, Suemez Island too. We just cruised around glassing the beaches for bears. Once one was found, it was a fire drill jumping into the skiffs and making a Navy SEAL insertion on the shore rocks. Then stalk the bear from downwind. And if he was big enough, then shoot. It was the peak of the rut and we saw 7-12 bears every day.

Wonderful! We leave for Vancouver Island tomorrow-I hope to have a similar pic when I get back.

Wonderful! We leave for Vancouver Island tomorrow-I hope to have a similar pic when I get back. Good Luck! You should see lots of bears on Vancouver Island, which has the highest bear density in North America, I believe. And I think you can take two bears, IIRC. Post pics when you get home.

We have been fishing the last couple of years out of a lodge down from Hydaburg, called Sea Otter Sound Lodge. If you ever get the chance to go it is an amazing trip. That part of the planet is truly incredible!

Congrats Dave for another fine bear and trophy!
If you shoot a young deer because a neighbor will shoot it, you are that neighbor.
