They are impressive for sure. Have seen 2 big ones on my place in the past 8 years. Grew up in east TX and never saw one.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

Beautiful snake S388. But I'm sure it would not be any fun to be on the business end of her fangs.
How long was it?
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I didn't shoot her. She was a good mile from the house in the middle of the woods. She wasn't hurting anything.

First of all,how the heck did you get close enough to check to see if it was a she? Once that strike pose i'm outta here. Zoom on the phone. These snakes are not aggressive at all. I've encountered more than a few in the past (three this year) and none have ever rattled at me. I saw the largest one I have ever seen crossing US 190 at the Polk Co./Tyler Co. line about 2 years ago. I blocked traffic in both lanes to get it out of the road safely. I used a piece of cardboard to push it out of the road and it still didn't offer to be aggressive. That snake was every bit of 6 feet long and as big around as a fruit jar. This snake I saw yesterday was close to 5 feet long if I had to guess and I counted 13 rattlers and a button. I have a stack of 16 that came off one ran over near Soda, TX at Menard Creek.

Years ago we were fishing and camping at Toledo Bend. Someone killed one and coiled it up by the porta john. You've never seen a young boy scream like a little girl, have you.

The only protected snakes are in a picture and at Bass Pro Shops. Every other snake I have seen has been attacking me and I have had to defend myself.

I didn't shoot her. She was a good mile from the house in the middle of the woods. She wasn't hurting anything. Good call. Probably what I would've done as long as she wanted to leave me alone. I've lived and hunted Texas all of my life, but have never heard the rattle up close and personal. I suspect we are hard wired to recognize it and go into fight or flight mode immediately.

I have not been hunting long, but I nearly stepped on one in the dark. It didn't rattle until I was literally about one foot from it. I thought it was a coke can fizzing.

She is a beauty. You should have stood next to it so we could get a reference on size;-)
Rattlers are funny in that most of them crawl stretched out straight and not curvy / snake-like.

I blocked traffic in both lanes to get it out of the road safely. You stopped traffic on a major highway/road for a damn snake? Yeah, I did. I'd do it again for the right snake. The snake that I got out of the road was "in the middle of nowhere" and was an absolute giant. It did not deserve to die on the highway. I'm no tree hugger by no means. I am, like many hunters and fishers, a conservationist. I see beauty in lots of things, some of those things being Timber Rattlesnakes and box turtles. Those animals will cause me to get out of the truck and help the get out of the road.
