I wanted to know if you guys think it's too early to put corn out?

Last year we had piles of corn due to the acorns. We're in the Hill Country and trying to decide what is best.

never to early... I put a bag out the other day for grins and it got cleaned up in 2 days.. but its just a waste right now around me cuz they have so much natural browse... id put out protein... if you plan on bow hunting the faster you get them on a regular feed schedule the better your chances if rut dosnt hit early

We don't all the time and not sure it makes a difference. I see more deer walking by a feeder than eating at one. One good point a person brought up was it might teach fawns to stop by regular/more often at an earlier age. Therefore possibly bring that one buck in years down the road a little closer. I can say with the amount of rain many of us have had, it is not going to help their candy diet out. We are in N. Tex though so they are different than down there.

They are killing my protien. I won't put corn out until it gets cooler. I like to give them a chance to get all the important stuff they need before I start iving them junk food. smile

Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Put out whatever your pocketbook can afford. The deer can't buy it you can.

Like stated before never to early, I never quit feeding. You may try something that has worked very well for me. Go buy the bottle of Bakers Vanilla in the taller bottle and start on the outside of the barrel and spiral it towards the center only using a quarter of the bottle. One bottle will do 4 feeders. This works wonders...promise

I don't start feeding until August...I let the guys around me feed them and then draw them away when it gets closer to the season. Much cheaper that way grin

...huh, sounds like something Goldy would do confused2

I would mix corn with the protein. The deer will eat the corn year round. The protein will help them with the much needed nutrients incase of a drought which I certainly hope does not happen. It is never to early to feed corn IMO.

Please clarify. Do you mean pour the vanilla on the ground directly under the feeder barrel?

I read that to mean you pour it on the corn inside the barrel, working from the sides to the center.

we/I feed corn year around but I cut it down to 3 sec for summer, then up to 9 sec in sept or oct... the people on our place who feed some year round see more deer thanthose that don't

My stand must be the exception. I have bigger deer and more deer than the feeders around me that feed year round

Are you feeding Indian Corn? That may be the reason.

I should add there's no question we end up feeding a lot of hogs by feeding year round, and especially during the summer months. But that's a very good thing for the off season shooting practice they provide. Time spent in a box stand waiting on a hog during the off season means watching lots of deer without all the excitement that comes with seeing one when it's legal to shoot them. And that in itself results in being better able to control the nerves when that bruiser walks out there come November.

Simply put, more "seat time" always lends itself to a better chance of success. Little wonder how the ones who seem to miss most often, are the same ones who haven't sat and watched a deer or fired a shot since last season.

Dang it, all this talk has me wanting to go shoot a hog.

+1 this exactly not on the ground, in the barrel not on the ground

My brother and I have used the Labor Day weekend as the time to start feeding. We make a trip to get the corn, inspect/service the feeders and set up cameras. It gives us some time to visit and also discuss if we want to move anything while there's time.

I feed corn and protein (separate feeders and separate areas) year around. Like Dan, I get some seat time while popping hogs and get to watch the deer as they progress through the year. Yes, there are slow times, but that's OK...

Our corn never stops, goes 24/7.

At my house I feed year round. Right now the does are teaching their fawns where the free food is. In 5 years that fawn may be a trophy.
