My brother has one from "hunting lines"... about the only thing that big 'ol girl can find in the field is our lunch sack and shade.

You can still find a good weim. Any breed that has become popular as just a pet gets the hunting lines watered down. You have to search out proven hunt/FC lines to get more than a bootlicker. Sure not an expert on them but the two I've been around had nasty temperaments.

Mine is 1/2 weim, 1/2 lab. Strong dog and 65lbs at 8 months. I have owned dogs my entire life and have never owned a dog with a better temperament or willingness to please.

Mine had a great temperament. He just liked to play with kids and do circus tricks much better than he liked to hunt.

Sure not an expert on them but the two I've been around had nasty temperaments. I'm no expert on them either, far from it. Ive only seen one that had the stuff to be a good bird dog. She was young, and bred smaller than any of the other weims Ive seen. I just figure if there is one, there must be more.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

My cousin has one, it is the calmest, most gentle dog I've ever seen. I know from research they are bred for loyalty and hunting ability traditionally, but since they never were 100% bred for birds originally, they never really caught on with mainstream bird hunters. my cousin has used his on TN and AR quail and duck. And on rabbit and coon when there were no birds. Tried to talk my wife into getting a puppy off him when they bred him, but he hasn't found a female worth breeding (hard to find hunting weims) and my wife didn't want that big of a dog.

I got the runt from a litter back in the early '60s. I did not know that they were supposed to be bird dogs and had no use for a dog other than one that would chase/varmints. We named him Archey and after we finally got him broke from trying to point everything, he made a heck of a good dog. He would kill skunks, coons, armadillos and would catch anything you would "hiss" him on. The dog was extremely intelligent and a great companion. He was steel blue in color and weighed about 80 pounds. Adios, Gary

Not sure that agile and obedient are the two most important traits in a pointing dog. Depending on what and where you hunt, I would say you have about a 1% chance of actually getting a decent dog. GSPs and pointers on the whole are vastly superior animals in every way. Back in the 70s I owned two that were decent duck dogs. But, had the range of my 82 year old mother with an anvil tied around her neck. If you want obedient then you most likely should have gone the Lab route. A pointing dog in his part of the country has to have drive, determination, stamina, bird finding ability, RANGE, and yes, biddability. But, without range and drive to find birds you don't have much IMHO. Weims tend to not have these traits any longer. Further, many many lines are aggressive to people. Not what I would want in my family pet.

It's not hard to find a good a good one, one that can win in all breed trials, get prize one in navhda. You just have to know where to look. Here is just one example. http://silvershotweimaraners.com/These are definitely not the norm but things seem to be getting better for the breed.

Also if anyone owns a female that is proven in the field. My cousin in Ten would love to talk to you about breeding his male.

The Weim as a breed is kinda soft. I should know I owned one for 14 years and going.but he is sure one cool dog . Still the .best dog I hunted behind is a vizsla and as far as breed goes I think gsp is as a breed you can't go wrong.

We've had opportunity to have some really exceptional Weims in my life. The one we had back in the early 80's was an incredible dog. The things that dog could do would blow your mind. He was perfectly obedient and would point AND retrieve. We had another a few years later that was also an excellent retriever but not as good as the first, and we never really had a place to hunt quail etc. with him, so I can't speak to that. Still though, a very good dog. Most recently the two Weims we had were offspring of the 2nd. They were great dogs, but did not have the natural instinct/savvy of the first two. They were great family dogs, and smart as a whip, but couldn't hunt a lick lol. Fortunately, that was ok. Size wise, all the Weims we've had, except for one female we're pretty big dogs. The last male I had, Duke, was about 85 lbs. His dad was even bigger than he was. The female was a bit smaller at ~65 lbs. I think the comments about bloodlines are spot on. I see way too many people with Weim's walking around suburbia. I think they've become one of the "in" dogs, which leads to a lot of less desirable breeding. Still good dogs, don't get me wrong, but I think it makes it hard to find dogs with good instincts. That goes for any dog though. After my last Weim passed away in October I inherited a GSP. Great little dog, smart as a tack but not a retriever... just a pointer.

Those are beautiful Weim pics! I love how thick and muscular they are, haven't seen one like that in person, all the ones I've seen are either super skinny or super fat! Pretty.

Field trials guys breed them small so they can run longer. You get a Weim that's big he can hunt just the same. But not as long.
