I have a problem. Last week coyotes killed 12 chickens and a tom turkey that was supposted to be thanksgiving dinner. They were free range and thats my fault. I can hear them every night. I would like to put a carcass out in the field and have a light pointed that direction all night. When I walk by the window I can see if any are there. Will the light scare them off?? I cannot call, I have tried, but they are smarter than me!!! I do not know how! It all started when we did not haul off a deer carcus far enough away from the house. Now They feel welcome coming to close to the chicken roost.

Welcome to The Forum.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, we raise poultry and livestock(sheep and goats), and have the same problem.

I can't guarantee this to work, but I also can't guarantee that it won't.

Set up a radio, tuned to like WBAP out of Fort Worth, turned up almost full volume, make sure it is on a TALK RADIO station. Supposedly, Rush Limbaugh is the best, but I have heard that it will keep the varmits away.

If you live close to town and they are used to hearing people talk they can get used to the radio sometimes. We raised a lot of watermelons when I was a kid and the coyotees got in them every night. We tried just about everything you could think of...hair, pee, radios, firecracker ropes, dogs...you name it. The only thing we found that they never got used to was holes. If you put holes in them they tend not to return. We called them...but I see that these you got trouble with aren't coming to a call. We also were allowed to shoot a certain number of deer if they started eating the melons and shot yotees off of thier leftovers. I got a cousin in Chatfield, Tx that has killed a PILE of them off hog carcasses. If those are tough to get a hold to, then use roadkill (gross I know...but?). He mounted a light over his bait when they got wise. Have you ever seen one of those "hog lights"? You mount a light over a feeder that comes on when it gets dark. It doesn't (shouldn't) be very bright, so it'll run all night off of a 12v battery. Some people swear by the yellow ones...some by red. It just needs to be light enough that you can see them through a scope...hang it over your carcass...or bait...or whatever. My cousin says it might take a few nights for them to forget the light is there...because it'll come on right at dark and stay on all night. When they get used to it...start busting them. If you kill enough of them you can run them off for a little while...but not forever.

I live in a remote area. Therfore people feel that they can drop any of there dead animals off on my road. (also live ones) I have a good supply of dead goats, sheep, dogs, deer, and you name it! I have a backhoe so I dont even have to get dirty to gather them up and use them for bait! I dont have a light to hang over the carcuss, but I do have a spot light that will reach the chosen shooting area. But it will have to run all night and I will be unable to turn it off or on. If this will work, it will be fun for the whole family. My wife has lost numerous cats to coyotes and we would all like to see some revenge. I noticed that when I had 5 dogs we did not have problems, but now we only have 1 and she comes in at night through the trap door and cannot hear the things from inside so she doest bark.
Since I am on the subject? Stay dogs are dropped off monthly, carring who knows what? Most are tick infested and most have severe case's of mange. I try to run them off by yelling and chaseing them, then it will progress to shooting with a bb gun. If they will not leave then, they get a 22-250. I hate to do this, but I cannot risk disease in my own animals. People should think things through before dropping off an unwanted animal on my road. What would you do?

I would do what needed to be done, but since doing that constitutes a state jail felony I would NOT talk, or type about it...dig? I had a VERY bad experience.
Your spot light idea might work once...but they'll be hip after that and won't come with 200yrds of it...lol. You might try getting an electronic caller since you say you are not having any luck with a mouth call. Cabelas has some that are pretty cheap...but you can take and old "walkman" style cassette player and a set of amplified speekers and do just as good...I wish I was closer, I have 2 or 3 of these little setups floating around here...lol. The enitire rig shouldn't cost but a few bucks though. The cassettes are also on the cheap side too.

Damm, you guys just make me paranoid
Thought you guys live in the land of freedom and have a proper justice system. Sounds like before you know it the goverment will stop all talk and close sites like this.

Ill tell a secret, dont no one tell, ok. At the back of Houston in a dark valley, green and lush and quiet as, I went spot lighting, there it was an elusive koala big eyes looking at my scope so i hit him with a silenced .17HMR and the .17 went strait though the head, no bull, and hit a Texan Wombat and then I buried them, lets see the game wardens come running now.

I don't think that telling a big tale here is going to get anyone in trouble, Luke. The point that I'm trying to make is there are folks out there that don not think like we do, and they seem to have some laws on thier side. You get just one person pissed off about you killing thier poor defensless cat or dog..or pig...that has been running rampant for who knows how long and you could be in a world of S*&T. Do a little pest thinin a little mouth running...a little typin...and viola ...you are a felon. Believe it...

It looks like I have help with my problem! I found this 50 feet from my chicken coop shot through the lower jaw. It is a couple days old. I found it today while quail hunting on my place today. I did not shoot it. It may have been shot down the road and just died on my place! As of today I am now missing 3 peacocks. This is getting out of hand!!!

I have only 33, but their is no danger of hitting anyone or anything to the north or east of me. It is about a quarter of a mile to the west of me to the closest house. I had a friend that was going to come, but he has not had a chance yet. I have ordered a caller and waiting for it.

well he was down garden city highway about 15 miles. We are going down there in January or Feburary and we're going to do some calling. He says they are just eat up with coyotes.
