This is the first time that I have seen a buck in our herd have what looks like some bad genes. Was this buck injured? Will he grow regular antlers next year, or should I just get him out of our herd?

that's a tough one. He is obivously not mature, so the chance of him breeding and majorly effecting your herd is not very high. I would let him walk and watch for him next year. my 2 cents.

WAIT 2 YEARS THEN SHOOT HIM AS A MATURE BUCK. IF YOU ARE NOT IN A HIGH FENCE CULLING IS A WASTE OF TIME.

we took one like that last year almost identical, after further evaluation he had deformed leg and hoof. look at his legs real close and see if hes injured or retarded.

He is young, and he does look like he might have been injured! I'd let him walk unless he seems sick, but if in good shape I would let him stick around for this season at least, and keep an eye on him, next season if he looks about the same I'd cull him.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I agree with BMD! Unless you are on a VERY rigorously controlled/managed high-fenced ranch, culling bucks is counterproductive. And even if you are on a well managed ranch, that is a VERY young buck with LOTS of horn....let him grow and see what he turns out to look like...

Saw one like that too! He had a club foot on one of his front legs! He actually looked like he had two sets of hoofs on that leg!

I'm gonna say he hurt while still in velvet or he has an injury as said before. I dont believe its a genetic flaw.

i would let him walk. he is maybe 2 yrs. and in some case's with an injury they will not drop their horns. if during the season you see him and he still has his velvet that is a good sign. let him walk and he will keep on growing horn and possibly turn into a decent freak buck. but if the injury is not to bad then chance's are he will come back fine next year and make your choice then. but if it is in fact an injury were he has injured himself bad enough to were he doesn't drop his horns (usually like hanging his family jewels on a fence or somthing) he can't produce young anyway's and will make for some interesting video and possibly a good mount some day down the road.

To me it looks like he is in velvet on his left side and his right side is complete hard antler. I think something happened to him and he got injured. He will probably drop that right antler and his left one still keep growing. I would probably take him out late in the season. Just to see how he does and if he is going to make it and if he's going to rub that velvet off or not. If he rubs it off on that left side, give him another year. If he doesn't take him out. JMO.

From the picture, that deer looks to be 1.5, the age when most are either spikes or fork horns, but he's a 6 point. I think he'll have a lot of potential in the future and that he had probably damaged his left side early in the horn growth stage. I would definately not shoot him this year, or for 3 more years for that matter.

I think in too many circumstances that deer would be harvested as a cull and mature 8s with no potential or 2.5 year old spikes are over looked. In my opinion, I think that buck will something in a few years.

If you are trying to decide if you want to take a deer out that has a deformed antler... work off of the good side... not off of the bad one.

Usually these things are 1 year injuries that the antler will recover from.

Brown is down baby. This is exactly what should be targeted. It's not genetics, but still inferior. And I'm not sure he's not 2.5 yrs old. Go ahead and feed him $200.00's worth of protein, rob the herd of natural forage, breed does and then shoot him in several years as a great cull! Just my opinion, but enjoy those bacon wrapped deer treats.
