Getting too expensive and it seems like all we (wife) does is watch the TV Guide looking for something to watch.

Just want to get the local channels, what do I need to do? Get an antenna? Can I buy a DVR to record from the antenna?

Any help/advice is appreciated.

Just get an antenna and hook it up to TV. That is all I have, works great and is all HD. It is funny when I am at a hotel and have cable it just takes longer to determine that there is nothing on cable either. Make sure to get an antenna that is UHF, you don't need the VHF anymore unless you want it for radio.

There are some DVRs that will work with over the air broadcast, last I looked (couple of years ago) they required a subscription to make the DVR work. I passed, didn't see a reason to pay to record something that is being sent to me for free.

My satellite bill is less than $40 after taxes & everything. You have to ask for the lowest possible package. Dish Network. Of course there are a few channels I don't have that I wish I did, but the next package above ours (the lowest one they advertise) would add $30 + tax to my bill. I don't think $40 is bad.

We're talking more and more about this as well. I'd like to do the over the air channels and then maybe add Netflix or Hulu Plus or something to get some of the shows that we couldn't get otherwise.

For these big TV's is the antennae put up in the attic or ??

I don't see how I'd put bunny ears on my plasma tv. grin

I dished cable about 4 years ago and dont miss it a bit. My rabbit ears are ran and actually sit on a window seal, the cable for it is ran along the baseboard, cant even see it.

When I find myself somewhere with cable I spend 30 minutes flipping and normally just end up watching something on one of the major network channels anyways.

most cable networks actually let you stream shows from their website

Attention rickym, this is not a troll post, just a good hearted fun type of post

You wouldn't be alone in ditching the dish

Looks like folks are ditching internet service too:

I picked up that antenna on monoprice.com for a few bucks less. It can be mounted inside or out depending on how close you are to the broadcast towers.

Thanks for all the info guys! I'll get an antenna this weekend and see if I can get it up and running.

Only reason we have cable is cause its free. I spend only about an hour a day on the tube though and the two shows I watch are on network tv

I keep my Dish for one key reason. It means having service at the deer lease. Once football season rolls around, it means being able to catch all the games.

I bought an ota antenna for my lakehouse since I'm not there daily. It's about the size of a 5x7 picture frame and lays flat. On a good day I have gotten up to 35 channels and I'm 60 miles From dallas. Now, half of those are religious or foreign language but the others are good. One channel seems to be for kids and one always plays movies. I always pic up a couple major networks. The clarity is way better than the fios hd I pay for at home. If I have trouble with a channel I move it around, auto program and usually get what I want. Picked up the ranger game the other day. Mine is an indoor multidirectional. They make more powerful outdoor units but I'm good with mine. The multidirectional have a larger radius but the directional have a much greater line of sight distance. I paid 40 bucks at Walmart. There are web sights that go into great detail. You could try one in the bedroom for a while and see how you like. Thought about scrapping the extra receivers in the bedrooms at home and saving $5 each. It's over my head but look up ota or free satellite tv on you tube. Some guys get hundreds of channels worldwide. It's funny to see how resourceful people are. Good luck.

No one had this in stock, so I went to Best Buy and bought one of those $30 flat ones. I had $20 in "points" so it cost me $10.91. Hooked it up and have over 30 channels and they are more clear and crisp than Dish ever was... Looks like a win for now.

If you have high speed internet Netflix or Amazon Prime are very cheap alternatives to cable. My wife and I have a bunch of movies and tv series saved on Amazon Prime that we watch, and they're always adding new stuff. Amazon works out to about $7 a month and you get free next day shipping off their website to boot.
