my friend shot a large dove (larger than a white wing- smaller than a pigeon). It had a white tip all the way across the tail feathers. i researched it on the internet and found that it may be a white tipped dove- however, the site said that these dove don't come any farther north than south texas. this was the biggest dove i have ever seen..sorry no pics. just wondering if anyone has any ideas.

thx-

Cable

Sounds like a white tipped. Global warming is pushing them north I hear.

Did it have a black ring around the back of its neck? I'm seeing a lot of Eurasian Collared doves here in North Texas. They are bigger than a white wing and have white tipped tail feathers, too.

I wouldn't know a white tipped dove if I saw one, but from the pics I've seen they look a lot more like a Mourning dove.

Here is a link to a photo of an ECD. I have seen them at my dad's place near Cleburne and they are much bigger than a mourning, white winged, or white tipped dove.

The tail looks similiar to what you described.

Here is a link to a page on my website that describes and has pictures of all the legal dove species in Texas. It also describes but does not show the protected dove species. www.hunting-in-texas.com/legaltexasdoves.htm

My question for your friend would be, if he didn't know for sure what it was, why did he shoot it? That's an easy way to wind up with a ticket if he shoots something that's protected, threatened or endangered. Fines for the rarest birds can be $50,000 and several years in prison. ALWAYS be sure of your target and what is in front and beyond.

A dove is a dove. Only law is to not shoot 2 white tipped?? You need to keep your rare birds out of the dove field.

There is no limit on Eurasian Dove, but only 2 white tipped dove in a bag.

The 2 white tipped dove limit is NOT the only law.

If you shoot an Inca Dove, Common Ground Dove, Ruddy Ground Dove or Ruddy Quail Dove and have a game warden check your bag, I guarantee you'll be getting a citation. The limit is ZERO on these birds!

I'm not trying to start any crud here, just keep you guys from getting yourselves in hot water. Ignore the info if you want to, or pay attention instead of paying fines. Your choice!

No season and no limit on Eurasian Collared Dove.
