The results are now posted online.

The good news is I WAS SUCCESSFUL FOR A MULE DEER TAG.
The bad news is I WAS SUCCESSFUL FOR A MULE DEER TAG (how am I going to pay for this????) smile

This was my first year entering the Kansas draw and was successful in Units 17 and 18. I'll be hunting with my old buddy Jeremy Gugelmeyer (JeremyKS) at his ranch in western KS. I'm looking forward to a hunt of a lifetime. If I bag a monster muley, that'll just make it that much better.

I had private land to hunt on last season and will probably have some more to hunt this year. The drought was so bad in that area that not sure if I will hunt that same area though. There is also WIHA (walk in hunting areas) that the KDWPT leases from landowners for a fee that allow you to hunt. Some are CRP, some farmland and some ranchland. Species specific I believe on some of them. Lot of guys will just take the time to go door to door and ask. Lot of the local hunters have some of the better places locked up for their own hunting.

I entered the draw with my outfitter already in mind. He has the lands already in his possession. While I'm certainly paying for it, it also assures me he's scouting, planning, etc for me.

The area I'm hunting is 500 miles each way from my house so I'm willing to trust his scouting and local knowledge.

Certainly each person has his own way of hunting. When hunting mule deer in an area that drawing a tag is difficult, I'm willing to invest for success.

Bonehunts I'm looking forward to the hunt! Chris was the very first group of antelope hunters I ever guided. He killed a huge goat and it is one of the biggest ones we have shot on the ranch to date. Hopefully we have that much luck with mule deer too.

I have private land that I lease up there. From what I have seen, it is tough to find but it is there. Haven't checked to see if I got my tag yet though....might be an opening grin

The website actually makes the walk in areas pretty easy to find. Have a couple of friends that have hunted them with mixed results.

In a way I miss the out of state hunts, on the other hand I don't miss the time on the road or the snow and cold.

We lease land, and have been lucky to draw a tag every year. We are gun hunters and from what I have seen I would not want to hunt public in the gun season. It gets hammered pretty hard
