My semester at West Texas A&M University had come to an end, and I was anxious to get back home to Coryell County and hunt some hogs along the Cowhouse Creek near King, TX. I was set up in a tree stand at the end of a 90 acre field. My plan was to snipe a pig with my new Savage 10/110 FCP HS Precision in .300 win mag.

Unfortunately, the grass in the field is about knee deep to waist deep, so it was easy for the pigs to stay hidden if they were out in the field. I saw one's back for a split second about 250 yds away, but never saw it again.

It got dark, I packed up my gear, put my light on my gun's scope, and prepared my mile long walk back to the truck. Near the corner of the field where I last saw the pig's back, I heard something rooting under a pecan tree in the tall grass. Sure enough, only about 15 yds away, I could make out a black pig silhouette. I was so close that I was scared to turn my light on and spook it. So I raised my gun up and looked at it through the scope, unfortunately I could not zoom out more than 6x, it's a long distance scope (6-24x zoom). Also, the grass kept me from figuring out which way it was facing since it was just standing still broadside.

I randomly picked and end of the hog hoping it was the front shoulder. I shot, and it turns out I shot it right in the hip. Good thing a 180 gr. Hornady SST offers a lot of forgiveness. I turned my light on, caught up to the struggling hog, and put it down with my .40 XDM. Porkchops have finally been collected.

Darn nice pig. More fun that way than long range anyhow.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.
