Just got a new AR 10. Im ready to put a scope on it and need suggestions for the best performance!! Doesnt have to be a sniper scope but figured with the .308 it would shoot down range a little. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Rut

If this aint an AR 10 scope, I don't know what is. http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-3-15x42-Tactical-Rifle-Scope-P62238.aspxYou could look at the Vortex Viper line, but I think the SS is more scope for your money. And 3-15X is pretty dang handy!

+1 for the Nikon M-308. I was shooting out to 500 yards with one this week at the Nikon Spot On Championships. Be sure to match it with the Spot On software. Deadly combination.....

It is just doing the MOA conversion for you. Know ballistic coeffiecent, bullet weight, and muzzle velocity. Go to http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmtraj-5.1.cgi and let it tell you the trajectory in Mils or MOA. Heck, you can even guess at muzzle velocity and get almost perfect or right on the money.

Bob is right on with his suggestion of a Nikon M-308 with either BDC or Rapid Action Turret. I watched him shoot this scope and was very impressed. Very nice of him to give the optic much of the credit for the accurate shooting of the DPMS LR-308. The 4-16 magnification will give you considerable flexibility and it comes with a 20 MOA AR Mount. If you go to Nikonhunting.com you can click the Spot On logo and check out all the ballistic info you will need.

I'd expect 1 MOA, but wouldn't be shocked with sub-MOA.
I would be shocked with = 1/2 MOA or less from a factory rifle.

I would be shocked with = 1/2 MOA or less from a factory rifle. I might be willing to put some $$$ on that with my JP. Guns much more accurate than I claim to be.

Here's a pic of my DPMS LR-308 topped with Nikon's M-308 AR Mount and the M-308 4-16 BDC 800 scope. Just sighted it in. First two shots were off to the right, next 4 right on. This scope will let you take your .308 about as far as you are comfortable shooting. Using Nikon's Spot On Balistic's Program will let you customize the distance to your rifle and ammo. If it didn't work I wouldn't be passing along this info. http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd363/bman940/dpmslr308.jpg

I'm going to avoid this argument of BDC vs. Mil or MOA. No matter what I write, I'll never convince you since you are probably loyal to the brand, and want to keep your job. Didn't even bother replying to an inquisitive PM I sent weeks ago.

So I feel like wading into this...
The most important thing is what do you want to do with it?
I put a 4-16 vortex (before the ss 3-15 came out) in mine. I planned to shoot paper with the goal of being able to go out to 1k.
The Nikon 4-16, ss 3-15', and vortex 4-16 will all serve that function. But if you wanted a 3 gun at for heavy metal I would go with a 1-4 type scope. So I get back to the question... What are you looking to do?
The mil dot vs bdc debate boils down to what you want to do as we'll. The bdc is nice if you use there app. I went mil dot because all my scopes are mil mil so they all look approx the same to me. And the techniques never change. A lot of people are very successful with bdc reticles too. I just didn't like that it was the odd yards for some of the dots.
